The Lock on the Bag

His Missing Daughter Was Found Locked Inside His Stepmother's Luggage

The zipper uncoiled with a sharp metallic sound in the quiet foyer.

David threw back the heavy leather flap of the designer suitcase.

Inside, curled into a tight ball, was seven-year-old Lily wearing her favorite white dress.

Her pale cheeks were wet with fresh tears, and her blonde hair was messy.

David: I've got you, baby, I've got you right here.

He wrapped his arms around her waist and lifted her out onto the cool tile floor.

Lily clung desperately to his neck, her small hands clutching his suit collar.

David buried his face in her hair, feeling an overwhelming wave of relief and fury.

He stood up holding her close, feeling her heart beating rapidly against his chest.

David: Who put you in there, Lily?

Lily: She locked me in, Daddy!

Lily lifted a trembling arm and pointed directly up the grand curved staircase.

Eleanor was standing three steps up, wearing her expensive beige trench coat.

Her hands gripped the dark wood railing so tightly her knuckles turned white.

Eleanor: What is going on down there?

David: You know exactly what is going on, Eleanor.

Eleanor: I have no idea what that child is talking about, David.

David took two heavy steps toward the stairs, his eyes dark with anger.

David: She was zipped inside your luggage next to the fire!

Eleanor: That is absolute nonsense, she must have climbed in herself while playing.

Lily: No, she zipped it shut and told me to stay quiet!

Eleanor's face lost all of its carefully maintained color in an instant.

She clutched her beige coat tighter around herself, backing up one step.

Eleanor: She is making up stories to get attention, David.

David: Look me in the eye and say that again.

Eleanor opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out this time.

David set Lily down gently behind him, keeping his body between them.

The betrayal felt like a cold blade cutting through the center of his chest.

He knew Eleanor was desperate for money, but this was beyond comprehension.
