The afternoon sun beamed through the tall glass windows of the grand Dallas reception hall, lighting up every polished marble tile on the floor. Beautiful floral arrangements sat on thirty round dining tables, surrounding a massive crystal chandelier that sparkled over the dance floor. Family members and wealthy business associates from all over Texas chatted happily while sipping expensive wine and enjoying gourmet food. Beautiful classical music played softly from four large speakers near the stage, creating a perfect atmosphere for a celebration.
At table four near the head table sat twenty-two-year-old Lily, a quiet college student with natural subtle freckles across her fair nose. She wore a simple white linen dress she bought on sale, feeling a bit out of place among women wearing designer silk dresses. Lily was the groom's younger half-sister, though few people in the room knew her name because she lived simply with her mother on the south side of town. She kept her head down, quietly watching the groom, her older brother Mark, laugh with his new wife, Victoria.
Mark was thirty-four years old and managed a successful real estate corporation that held millions of dollars in commercial properties across North Texas. Next to him stood Victoria, a striking model with a diamond tiara resting on her blonde hair and a floor-length lace gown. Victoria had spent six months planning this event, making sure every single detail showcased wealth, power, and high social standing. Yet Lily noticed that Victoria kept looking at her watch every two minutes with nervous, darting eyes that seemed cold and distant.
Suddenly, Victoria walked over to Lily's table with a tall glass of sparkling champagne in her hand and a tight smile on her red lips. She leaned down close to Lily, her eyes narrowing into small slits behind heavy false eyelashes as she tilted her glass sideways. Without warning, Victoria splashed the cold liquid directly into Lily's face, soaking her freckled cheeks, hair, and the front of her clean white dress. The sudden splash echoed like a small slap in the quiet corner of the grand banquet room.
Victoria: You do not belong at this head table.
Lily: Why would you splash champagne on me?
Victoria: Look at your cheap dress ruined now.
Lily: I did nothing wrong to you today!
Victoria: Get out of my sight right now!
Mark turned around from the main stage, his jaw dropping in complete shock as he saw his sister wiping sticky champagne from her face. His hands shook in his tux pockets as he rushed over, looking back and forth between his crying sister and his furious new wife. Several guests at neighboring tables stopped eating, their forks resting in mid-air as whispers began to spread across the sunny hall like wildfire.
Mark: Victoria, what on earth are you doing?
Victoria: She was trying to ruin our wedding photo!
Lily: That is not true at all, Mark!
Victoria: Leave before I call security on you!
Lily wiped her eyes with a cloth napkin, her hand shaking violently as she reached deep into her small hand purse for her phone. She knew that if she spoke without proof, nobody in this wealthy room would ever take the side of a poor college student over a high-society bride. The entire hall grew deathly quiet as Mark stepped between the two women, his eyes searching for answers in the bright daylight.
