Six months later, the sun shone warm and bright over the back gardens of the Vance estate in Dallas. The green grass stretched out toward the stone pool, where red roses bloomed along the high wooden fence.
Inside the main house, the white marble floor in the grand hall was spotless, reflecting the bright daylight from the floor-to-ceiling windows. The vertical American flag hung straight and proud against the white wall, shining under the overhead lights.
Christopher walked out onto the back patio carrying two cold glasses of lemonade. He walked over to the wooden table where Margarethe sat reading a book in the warm breeze.
Christopher: "Here you go, Margarethe. Freshly squeezed."
Margarethe: "Thank you, Christopher. You really don't have to wait on me like this."
Christopher: "You waited on me for twenty years. It's my turn now."
Sarah came walking out through the glass patio doors, holding a clip board and smiling as she sat down with them.
Sarah: "Mr. Vance, the new foundation team just finished setting up the local food drive for next month. All the money Victoria stole has been fully put back into the main account."
Christopher: "That is great news, Sarah. And how are the new staff members doing?"
Sarah: "They are wonderful. Everyone is happy, and the house has never felt lighter."
Margarethe looked out over the green garden, taking a small sip of her cold drink as a peaceful smile spread across her face.
Margarethe: "It feels like the old days again, Christopher. When your mother used to sit right here and watch you play on the lawn."
Christopher: "It does. We brought the heart back to this home, Margarethe."
Margarethe: "Truth and love always win in the end, child. You just have to stand up for what is right."
Christopher smiled, leaning over to kiss the old woman on her forehead. The dark days of anger, theft, and abuse were gone forever, replaced by the peace and love of a real family that could never be broken again.
