Papers On The Table

Her Wealthy Boss Slapped Her But Didn't Know Her Secret

Victoria struggled to sit up amidst the puddle of wine and shattered glass, her voice shaking violently with anger and shame. She pointed a trembling finger toward two large security guards who were rushing through the crowd toward the stage. The party guests were whispering loudly now, taking out their cell phones to record videos of the unbelievable scene unfolding. Victoria felt sticky wine dripping down her neck, her expensive makeup running down her pale cheeks in dark grey streaks. She looked completely ruined, like a fallen statue sitting in a pile of garbage on her own ballroom floor.

Victoria: Throw this dirty criminal into jail forever!

Hannah: Tell the guards to check your phone first.

Victoria: What are you talking about, you insane maid?

Before the heavy security guards could grab Hannah's arms, the tall double doors at the entrance swung wide open. A elderly gentleman in a clean gray suit walked into the room carrying a thick leather briefcase under his arm. Beside him walked two uniform officers from the Dallas Sheriff Office, holding official legal notices stamped with red wax seals. It was Mr. Harrison, the senior lawyer who had served Hannah's late father faithfully for over twenty long years. The crowd parted automatically, letting the law officers walk straight down the center aisle toward the fallen woman.

Victoria froze on the floor, her eyes widening in deep terror as she recognized her late husband's old lawyer. Mr. Harrison pulled a set of clean white papers from his leather bag and stepped around the broken champagne glass. He looked down at Victoria with a stern face, devoid of any pity or warm comfort for her embarrassing situation. He held out the stamped court papers so everyone standing nearby could see the official legal seals on the front page.

Mr. Harrison: Mrs. Vance, you are served with foreclosure papers.

Victoria: This is my event! Get out of here!

Mr. Harrison: This building no longer belongs to you, Victoria.

Victoria: That is impossible! I own everything Arthur left!

Mr. Harrison: The court proved your fake will was forged.

Hannah: The game is over, Victoria. Look at me.

Hannah stepped forward, wiping the small spot of blood from her lip with the back of her hand. She stood tall over Victoria, her head held high in front of all the city's wealthy business leaders. Victoria stared up at the maid, her brain trying desperately to make sense of the words being spoken around her. She looked at Hannah's bright blue eyes and suddenly saw the sharp resemblance to Arthur Miller for the very first time. The truth hit her like a cold bucket of water, freezing the blood inside her veins.

Victoria: You... you are Arthur's daughter Hannah?

Hannah: I am Arthur Miller's only real heir.

Victoria: You lied to me! You worked as my maid!

Hannah: I needed to find what you stole from me.
