A Trust Built On Lies

Her Stepmother Stole Everything Until She Called Her Father

Five years earlier, the Vance family had been known as one of the most respected families in the county. David Vance was the founder of a successful logistics firm, and his late wife Eleanor had been the creative brain behind their real estate investments. When Eleanor fell ill, Victoria had stepped in as a family consultant and financial assistant. Within two years of Eleanor's passing, Victoria had married David, convincing him that she would protect Eleanor's memory and ensure that Maya received her full inheritance when she turned twenty-five. Maya had trusted her stepmother completely, even agreeing to let Victoria handle her mother's personal accounts.

David: Maya? What is going on over there? Are you injured?

Maya: Victoria hit me with the glass pitcher, Dad. I'm bleeding.

David: I am five minutes away with airport security and the county police!

Victoria: David, don't listen to her! She broke into my private office!

David: Shut up, Victoria! I heard everything you said!

Victoria's knees buckled slightly, and she had to grab the back of a high chair to keep from falling. She looked around the giant dining room, realizing that every luxury item, every antique painting, and the grand house itself were slipping through her fingers. For years, she had slowly transferred funds from Eleanor's trust into shell accounts under her maiden name. She had convinced David that the investments were losing value, forcing him to take out a second mortgage on the mansion to cover company debts. In truth, Victoria was planning to file for divorce in two months, walk away with millions, and leave David and Maya with nothing but debt.

Maya: She took Mom's real estate stock certificates, Dad.

Victoria: You don't understand how business works, you ungrateful child!

Maya: I understand that forgery and grand theft carry fifteen years in prison.

Victoria: I saved this family from financial ruin when your father was depressed!

Maya: You drained my mother's life insurance before her body was even buried.

Maya held the red-stained napkin to her neck, her breath steady despite the stinging pain. She remembered sitting in this very room three years ago, watching Victoria smile sweetly while pouring tea for the family lawyers. Back then, Maya had felt guilty for ever doubting her stepmother. Now, seeing Victoria's true face exposed in the bright afternoon sun, Maya felt no guilt at all. She felt only a cold, clear sense of justice. The blood on her blouse was proof of how far Victoria was willing to go to keep her stolen fortune.

David: Stay where you are, Maya. The police cars are turning onto our street now.

Victoria: David, please let me explain before you do something foolish!

David: You hurt my daughter. There is nothing left to explain.
