The Trial Of Evelyn

Her Stepmother Lowered The Baby Into A Well Until Her Husband Saw

Six months later, the air conditioning hummed softly inside the crowded courtroom of the Frank Crowley Courts Building in downtown Dallas. Rows of reporters, estate lawyers, and curious locals filled the wooden pews.

At the defense table sat Evelyn, dressed in a drab denim jail jumpsuit, her once-immaculate blonde hair now streaks of grey pulled back into a tight bun. Her hands were cuffed to a chain around her waist.

Across the room, Mark sat at the prosecutor's table, holding a small sketchbook as four-year-old Lily sat quietly in his lap drawing pictures with crayons.

Judge Vance: "In the matter of the State of Texas versus Evelyn Vance-Sterling, the jury has reached a verdict."

Court Clerk: "On count one, attempted capital murder of a child under six years of age, we find the defendant, Evelyn Vance-Sterling, guilty."

A collective gasp rippled through the gallery. Evelyn slumped forward, her forehead nearly hitting the defense table as her high-priced attorney closed his eyes in defeat.

Court Clerk: "On count two, aggravated kidnapping, guilty. On count three, injury to a child, guilty."

Judge Vance: "Does the defense have any statement before sentencing?"

Defense Attorney: "Your Honor, my client is an elderly woman with no prior criminal record. We ask for leniency based on her mental state at the time of the incident."

Prosecutor: "Your Honor, the state requests the maximum penalty under Texas law. The defendant meticulously planned the execution of a three-year-old child for pure financial greed[cite: 1]. If not for Mr. Sterling's swift actions, that child would be dead at the bottom of a well."[cite: 1]

Judge Vance leaned over her bench, looking down at Evelyn with stern, unyielding eyes.

Judge Vance: "Mrs. Sterling, the video evidence presented in this courtroom was one of the most horrific displays of calculated cruelty I have ever witnessed in my twenty years on the bench. You showed no mercy to an innocent toddler, and this court will show no mercy to you."

Evelyn: "Please, Your Honor! It was the stress! The family fortune was slipping away!"

Judge Vance: "Silence. I sentence you to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole at the Lane Murray Unit in Gatesville. Take her away."

Evelyn shrieked as the bailiffs grabbed her arms, dragging her through the side door of the courtroom while her cries echoed off the mahogany paneling until the heavy door clicked shut.
