The quiet in the sunlit kitchen was shattered by a baby’s terrified wail. Six-month-old Toby sat strapped into his high chair, his small legs kicking uselessly as tears streamed down his red, bruised cheeks. Dark red marks were already rising across his upper arms and tiny chest.
Clara: Oh my God! Toby!
Clara sprinted through the doorway in her green sweater, her shoes skidding across the white marble floor. Her heart slammed against her ribs as she unbuckled the strap and pulled her weeping baby tightly into her arms.
Clara: Ssh, Mommy’s here, baby! Mommy’s got you!
Elena: It was barely anything! You’re completely overreacting, Clara!
Clara turned around slowly, cradling Toby against her shoulder. Standing near the island table was her stepmother, Elena. Elena had dark bruises around her own eyes—a lingering remnant of a reckless night out—and her face was twisted into a defensive, bitter sneer.
Clara: Don't you ever touch my baby again!
Elena: He wouldn't stop screaming! I barely tapped his arm to make him quiet down!
Clara: Look at his skin, Elena! He has bruises on his chest! You put your hands on a six-month-old infant!
Elena: He’s spoiled, just like you! Someone has to teach discipline in this house!
Heavy, furious footsteps echoed from the main hallway. The heavy glass doors swung open with a bang, and Mark stepped into the kitchen. Dressed in a dark sweater, his eyes swept over his crying son, his wife's pale face, and Elena’s guilty posture.
Mark: You put your hands on my son?!
Mark moved before Elena could even open her mouth. He rushed forward in pure, uncontainable rage, shoving Elena so hard she flew backward, crashing flat onto the pristine white marble floor.
Elena: AHH!
Mark: Maybe that'll teach you a lesson!
Elena lay flat on the cold marble floor, clutching her hip in shock as Mark stood over her, his chest heaving with fury. But as Mark reached for his phone to dial the police, Elena let out a cold, chilling laugh that made the whole room freeze.
