The Truth Behind The Fire

Richard: Officer, this is absurd! My wife and I were in shock! You can't listen to the word of a frightened child and a housemaid!

Police Officer: I'm listening to what my own eyes see, sir. You two are uninjured, carrying two leather suitcases and a safe, while your maid was the one who pulled your disabled son from a burning building[cite: 1].

Eleanor: The safe has our essential legal documents! We needed our passports and estate papers!

Clara: Estate papers? Is that what you were doing up on the third floor before the fire started, Eleanor?

Eleanor's eyes widened in sudden panic as she took a small step back toward her husband[cite: 1].

Eleanor: What are you talking about?! I was downstairs having tea when the alarm sounded!

Clara: I saw you go into the study with a gas canister twenty minutes ago. I thought you were filling the lawnmower, but the lawnmower is kept in the garage outside.

Richard: Shut your mouth, Clara! You have no idea what you're talking about!

Clara: You took out a five-million-dollar fire insurance policy on this estate last week, didn't you, Richard?

Reporter: Five million dollars?! Is this an arson plot?!

Richard: This is slander! Officer, arrest this woman for defamation!

Paramedic: Ma'am, let us check the boy's oxygen levels. Set him down on the gurney here.

Clara gently placed Leo onto the white paramedic gurney, but she kept her hand firmly wrapped around his small fingers[cite: 1]. Leo held on to her, refusing to let go.

Leo: Clara, don't leave me with them... please.

Clara: I'm right here, Leo. I am not going anywhere without you.

Police Officer: Sergeant, get the arson investigator over here right now. I want those leather suitcases searched immediately.

Eleanor: You can't search our private property without a warrant!

Police Officer: Under suspicion of child endangerment, attempted murder, and arson, ma'am, we certainly can.

Two officers stepped forward and popped open the latches on Richard's heavy leather briefcase right there on the hood of the police cruiser[cite: 1]. Inside, packed neatly in stacks, were thick bundles of hundred-dollar bills, three foreign passports, and a recently updated life insurance policy on little Leo.

Police Officer: Well, well, well... What do we have here? A life insurance policy with a double indemnity clause for accidental fire death?

The crowd gasped louder, several people shouting curses at the wealthy couple as the evidence was exposed under the bright daylight[cite: 1].

Clara: You didn't just leave him... You set that fire on purpose, didn't you?! You wanted him to die in that room!

Eleanor: No! It wasn't supposed to happen like this! Richard, tell them!

Richard: Shut up, Eleanor! Don't say another word!
