The bright Dallas sunshine poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the luxury mansion in Southlake, illuminating the festive pink birthday balloons tied to every chair.
Brandon: Hey everyone, sorry I'm late! The traffic on I-35 was unbelievable.
Brandon stepped into the high-key, pristine kitchen, loosening his blue designer blazer.
Brandon: Mom, happy birthday! I brought the expensive wine you wanted.
He set the bottle on the quartz island, but nobody answered him with a warm smile.
Brandon: Wait, what's going on in here?
Brandon paused as his eyes fell on his wife, Sarah, standing near the marble sink.
Sarah: Oh, Brandon... you're home early.
She flinched, instinctively turning her face away from the bright kitchen lights, but it was too late.
Brandon: Sarah, look at me. What happened to your face?
Her dark under-eye circles were hollow with sheer exhaustion, but worse was the dark purple bruise blooming across her cheekbone.
Sarah: It's nothing, really. I just... I tripped while carrying the stroller down the stairs earlier.
She shift-balanced their fourteen-month-old daughter, Chloe, on her trembling shoulder while trying to wash heavy cast-iron pans with her free hand.
Brandon: You tripped? Sarah, that doesn't look like a trip.
Sarah: Please, Brandon, don't make a scene today. It's your mother's sixty-fifth birthday party.
Brandon turned around slowly to look at the lavish dining table set for twelve.
Brandon: WHY DON'T YOU HELP HER AT LEAST HOLD THE BABY?
His mother, Evelyn, sat at the head of the dark mahogany table, sipping mimosa in her pastel dress.
Evelyn: Lower your voice in my house, Brandon. We have guests coming in twenty minutes.
Brandon: I asked you a simple question, Mom! She can barely stand, and she's scrubbing dirty dishes with a toddler on her chest!
Evelyn: WHY SHOULD I DO THAT WHEN I'M THE ONE IN CHARGE OF THIS HOUSE?
Brandon froze, his knuckles turning stark white against his blue blazer.
Brandon: What did you just say to me?
Evelyn: You heard me clear enough, son. Now sit down and let her finish her chores before the caterers arrive.
Brandon looked at his trembling wife, then at his mother's cold, arrogant eyes, feeling a dark truth unraveling right before his eyes.
