Six months later, the Florida State Circuit Court was filled with reporters, television cameras, and high-society observers from across Palm Beach.
Victoria Vance sat at the defense table wearing a dark orange county jail jumpsuit. Her blonde hair was dull and unstyled, and her face looked thin and drawn. Steel chains bound her wrists to a leather belt around her waist.
Across the aisle sat Julian Sterling, looking regal in a navy suit. Beside him sat Lily, wearing a pretty yellow dress, holding her father's hand tightly as she looked around the courtroom without fear.
Judge Holloway: "We are ready to deliver sentencing in the case of State of Florida versus Victoria Vance."
Prosecutor: "Your Honor, the state has presented clear, high-definition video evidence showing the defendant intentionally pouring ice water over a four-year-old child as a form of physical punishment. The psychological trauma and physical distress inflicted were severe."
Defense Attorney: "Your Honor, my client expresses deep regret! She was overwhelmed by the sudden responsibilities of stepmotherhood!"
Judge Holloway: "Overwhelmed? She prepared a bucket of ice and laughed while a child screamed for mercy. I have watched the surveillance footage multiple times, and it shows a cold, callous disregard for human life."
The judge raised his heavy wooden gavel, looking down at Victoria with utter contempt.
Judge Holloway: "Victoria Vance, for the felony conviction of aggravated child abuse and domestic battery, I sentence you to fifteen years in the Florida Department of Corrections without the possibility of early parole."
Victoria: "FIFTEEN YEARS?! NO! YOUR HONOR, PLEASE! IT WAS JUST ICE WATER!"
Judge Holloway: "You turned a home into a place of fear for a motherless child. You will serve every single day of that sentence. Court is adjourned."
The heavy gavel slammed down with a loud, final crash.
Victoria: "JULIAN! TELL THEM TO STOP! YOU DESTROYED MY LIFE!"
Bailiffs grabbed Victoria by her arms, dragging her through the side doors as she thrashed and screamed in vain.
Julian didn't even look back at her. He picked up Lily in his arms, smiling as she wrapped her tiny arms around his neck.
They walked out of the courtroom together into the bright, warm sunshine outside. The nightmare was finally over, and the Sterling home was filled with love, warmth, and peace once again.
