The bright sun shone through the tall glass windows of the grand mansion, throwing light across the smooth white marble floors. Victoria stood in the center of the big room, wearing a dark silk dress that rustled as she moved. She looked down at Elena, who was kneeling on the cold floor with tears running down her face. Elena had worked as a housemaid for three years, fixing rooms and keeping the big house clean every single day. She had never taken a single cent that did not belong to her. Yet today, in front of twenty wealthy guests, she was being called a common thief. The guests stood in a circle, watching with quiet coldness as Victoria waved her hand angrily in the air. The American flag stood tall on its pole near the marble staircase, quiet and bright in the clear daylight.
Victoria stepped forward and pointed her finger right at Elena's brown tote bag resting on the tiles. The bag was open just enough for everyone to see bright sparkles reflecting off the high ceiling lights. Inside lay three expensive diamond necklaces that cost more money than Elena would earn in ten years of hard labor. Elena reached out with shaking hands, wanting to pull the bag closer to prove her innocence, but she was too afraid to move. She felt every eye in the room burning into her back. The air felt heavy and cold despite the warm sunlight pouring through the glass doors. Victoria laughed loudly, a sharp sound that echoed across the high ceiling.
Victoria: You filthy little thief! Where are my diamonds?!
Elena: I did not take them, ma'am! I was cleaning the study upstairs!
Victoria: Do not lie to me! They are right inside your personal bag!
Elena: Somebody put them in there while I was carrying linens downstairs!
Victoria: Who would put millions of dollars in a maid's dirty bag?!
Julian stepped out from the crowd of guests, his face pale as he looked between his wife and the maid on the floor. He had known Elena to be honest and quiet since the day she was hired to work in their home. He reached out and touched Victoria's arm softly, trying to calm her down before things got completely out of control. The guests began whispering among themselves, nodding their heads as if they had already decided Elena was guilty without proof. Elena looked up at Julian, her brown eyes filled with deep fear and desperation. She knew that if she was arrested today, her life would be completely destroyed forever. Her young daughter was waiting at home, counting on her weekly paycheck for food and school books.
Julian: Victoria, let us step into the office and speak calmly about this.
Victoria: Speak calmly?! She stole my family heirlooms right under our noses!
Julian: We should not make a huge scene before we know every detail.
Victoria: The proof is sitting right on the marble floor for everyone to see!
Elena: Mr. Julian, please check the security cameras in the west hallway!
Victoria shifted her weight quickly, her eyes darting toward the security panel mounted high on the wall near the staircase. Her face paled for a fraction of a second, though she tried to cover it up with a loud sigh of disgust. She stepped closer to Elena and kicked the edge of the bag, sending one of the gold clasps clicking against the floor. The sound echoed through the silent mansion, making several guests gasp in horror at the sight of the jewels. Elena kept her knees planted on the cold stone, holding back her sobs as she looked up at the ceiling lights. She prayed that someone in this huge home would listen to reason before the police arrived to take her away in handcuffs.
