Frank stepped around the counter and knelt beside the little girl.
His voice became gentle.
"Who are you buying breakfast for?"
The child looked down at her worn shoes.
For a few moments, she couldn't answer.
Finally, she whispered,
"My grandpa."
"He says burnt pancakes are his favorite."
She paused.
Then her voice trembled.
"But..."
"I know he only says that because we don't have much money."
Frank looked away for a moment.
He suddenly remembered his own father doing the exact same thing decades earlier.
Pretending to love the broken pieces so his children would never feel guilty.
Without saying another word, Frank returned to the grill.
He ignored the burnt pancake completely.
Instead, he mixed fresh batter.
Cooked a perfect golden stack.
Added melting butter.
Warm maple syrup.
Fresh strawberries and blueberries.
Two crispy strips of bacon.
And a cup of rich hot chocolate.
He carefully packed everything into a warm takeout box.
Then handed it to the little girl.
She stared at it in disbelief.
"But..."
"I only asked for the burnt one."
Frank smiled kindly.
"I know."
