Gabriel walked slowly around the long table toward his crying maid, ignoring Victoria's angry protests. He reached down and gently inspected Maria's burn, his heart aching with deep guilt that such a horrible act had occurred under his own roof. He motioned to the second maid to take Maria into the kitchen immediately to run cold water over the burn and fetch the first-aid kit. Once the kitchen doors swung shut, the dining room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence that made the air feel thick.
Gabriel turned back to face his wife, his eyes cold and dark with disappointment. Victoria stood tall, adjusting her silk shirt, clearly believing she had done nothing wrong. She actually thought her husband would back her up against a low-paid worker. But Gabriel looked at her now with complete disgust. He lifted his left hand, his thumb catching the edge of the large diamond wedding band that had rested on his ring finger since their lavish wedding day.

It sat right beside the spilled tea stain, glinting under the chandelier light like a forgotten artifact.
