The Threat on the Porch

Sarah: That car coming down the street right now belongs to Richard Vance.

Marcus: Who is Richard Vance?

Sarah: He's a dirty real estate lawyer who represents the local property trust.

Toby: He screamed at my mommy yesterday, mister! He said we had to pack our bags!

Marcus: Nobody is screaming at your mother while I'm breathing, kiddo.

A sleek black luxury sedan parked aggressively right behind the line of motorcycles. A man in a sharp grey suit stepped out, holding a thick yellow folder.

Richard: What is this? A circus? Move these trashy bikes out of my way!

Marcus: Watch your mouth, suit. You're standing on sacred ground.

Richard: Sacred ground? This house is in default on its mortgage! The foreclosure notice was served three weeks ago!

Sarah: That mortgage was paid in full by David's military life insurance policy! You know that, Vance!

Richard: The bank never received the wire transfer, Mrs. Miller. Without proof of payment, this property goes to auction tomorrow morning.

Toby: You're a liar! My daddy said our home was safe!

Richard: Quiet, boy. Adults are speaking. Mrs. Miller, if you sign this voluntary eviction form right now, I'll grant you two thousand dollars for relocation expenses.

Marcus: Two thousand dollars? For a house worth four hundred thousand?

Richard: Mind your own business, biker. You have no standing here.

Marcus: I have all the standing in the world. Captain David Miller was my squad leader in the United States Army Marines. I am the executor of his military veteran trust fund.

Richard: Executor? That trust was declared inactive six months ago due to missing signatures!

Sarah: Missing signatures? David signed those papers right before his final tour!

Richard: Well, the originals were lost in transit. Therefore, the house belongs to Vance Estate Holdings.

Marcus: The originals weren't lost, Vance. David gave the duplicate certified copy directly to me for safekeeping.

Richard: What? That's impossible! The county recorder said there were no duplicates!

Marcus: The county recorder is your brother-in-law, isn't he?

Richard: That has nothing to do with this!

Marcus: It has everything to do with this. You forged the foreclosure paperwork thinking a grieving widow wouldn't have the strength to fight back in court.

Sarah: Is that true, Vance? Did you steal my husband's pension payout?

Richard: This is ridiculous! I'm calling the police to clear these hooligans off the street!

Marcus: Go ahead. Call them. My brother Big Bear over there happens to be the retired Chief of Police for this county.

A massive veteran biker stepped forward, pulling a silver badge from his pocket with a cold smile.

Big Bear: Go on, counselor. Make the call. I'd love to tell my former officers how you've been defrauding military widows.

Richard: You... you can't intimidate me like this!

Marcus: We aren't intimidating you, Vance. We're giving you a choice. Hand over the forged title documents, or leave here in handcuffs.

Richard: Fine! You want to play hardball? We'll see you in court tomorrow at nine in the morning!

Marcus: See you there, Vance. Bring your best defense lawyer. You're going to need him.

Richard slammed his car door and sped away down the suburban street, leaving a cloud of exhaust in the air.

Sarah: Marcus... I don't know what to say. He's been harassing us for months.

Marcus: You don't have to say anything, Sarah. David saved my life under heavy fire. Helping his family is my duty.

Toby: Mister Marcus... will we really get to stay in our home?

Marcus: You have my word on it, Toby. But first, we need to gather David's original military service records from the town hall.

Sarah: The town hall closes in one hour... and Vance's brother-in-law controls the archives department.

Marcus: Then we'd better ride fast. Boys, mount up!

The bikers kicked their starter pedals, and twenty engines roared to life at once[cite: 1]. But when they arrived at the archives building, the front doors were locked from the inside.
