Fall Of The House Of Sterling

Outside the Dallas luxury gala venue, the noon sun shone brightly over a sea of news vans, flashing camera lights, and dozens of eager reporters holding microphones.

The heavy glass doors swung open, and two police officers escorted Mindy Sterling down the front steps, her yellow dress torn, her makeup smeared with tears, and steel handcuffs binding her wrists behind her back.

Reporter 1: Mindy! Is it true your father embezzled fifty million dollars from the medical fund?!

Reporter 2: Did you really slap Commander Victoria Vance inside the ballroom?!

Mindy: Get those cameras out of my face! My lawyer is going to sue every single one of you!

Reporter 3: Look! There's Richard Sterling!

Flashbulbs went off in a blinding wave as Richard was led out right behind his daughter, his head bowed as two federal agents guided him into the back of a black armored SUV.

Richard: No comment! No comment!

Reporter 1: Mr. Sterling, how do you respond to the federal indictment filed against your firm this morning?!

Richard said nothing as the agent pushed his head down and shut the heavy SUV door, sealing him inside the darkened vehicle.

Mindy was forced into the back of a separate police cruiser. She pressed her tear-stained face against the window, watching the grand estate building shrink as the car pulled away from the curb.

Inside the gala hall, Victoria stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the news cars drive away down the sunlit boulevard.

Marcus stepped up beside her, holding a tablet displaying real-time financial market updates.

Marcus: Stock in Sterling Enterprises has dropped eighty-five percent since the news broke ten minutes ago, Commander. The company is officially insolvent.

Victoria: Buy up the remaining shares at pennies on the dollar. We'll restructure the firm into a non-profit housing trust by tomorrow morning.

Marcus: And what about the Sterling family trust funds?

Victoria: Frozen by court order. Mindy won't have a single dollar left to buy designer dresses or pay for high-priced defense lawyers.

Marcus: She brought this on herself, ma'am. Striking a commander in public was pure stupidity.

Victoria: Arrogance always makes people stupid, Marcus. She thought money made her invincible.

Victoria touched her left cheek one last time. The red mark had already begun to fade, leaving her fair skin smooth and spotless under the high-key light.

Marcus: Should I call the medical staff to look at that scratch?

Victoria: No need, Marcus. It's just a small reminder that power isn't about shouting or making threats.

Marcus: What is it about, ma'am?

Victoria: It's about having the strength to stand tall when the strike comes, and the authority to end the fight before it even begins.
