The Midnight Siren

A Weeping Grandmother Uncovered Her Declared Dead Granddaughter In A Frozen Cellar

Torrential rain whipped across the dark grounds of the multi-million-dollar estate as Clara scooped Lily into her arms.

The six-year-old wrapped her thin arms around Clara’s neck, her teeth chattering uncontrollably from the freezing wind.

Lily: Grandma, I'm too heavy. Your hands are shaking.

Clara: You are never too heavy for me, baby. Keep your head tucked into my coat.

Clara ran across the soaked lawn toward the front circular driveway where her old sedan was parked near the guest garage.

Suddenly, the bright high-beam headlights of an approaching vehicle swept across the stone entrance gates.

A sleek white medical transport van pulled into the estate driveway, its engine rumbling in the midnight rain.

The driver’s side door opened, and a man in a navy blue doctor's scrub jacket stepped out under a large black umbrella.

Doctor Vance: Julian? Is that you on the lawn? Why are you outside in this downpour?

Clara stopped on the gravel driveway, shielding Lily behind her back as she faced the corrupt physician.

Clara: Doctor Vance. What a coincidence to see you here at two o'clock in the morning.

Doctor Vance froze, his flashlight beam locking onto the shivering child peeking around Clara’s coat.

Doctor Vance: Mrs. Vance? What... what are you doing here?

Clara: I came to pick up my granddaughter. The granddaughter you officially pronounced dead on Tuesday morning.

Doctor Vance’s face turned ghostly white in the headlights, his mouth opening and closing without sound.

Doctor Vance: You don't understand the clinical situation, Clara. Lily had a severe case of neuro-pulmonary failure...

Clara: Save your rehearsed medical lies for the state licensing board, Vance. Julian confessed everything.

Doctor Vance: Julian confessed? Where is Julian?

Clara: He’s locked in his own cellar with a broken knee, waiting for the police.

A second man stepped out of the passenger side of the medical van, wearing heavy tactical clothing and black leather gloves.

Courier: Doctor, who is this woman? We have a strict flight clearance window at the cargo hangar.

Doctor Vance: We have a catastrophic problem, Carl. The grandmother found the girl.

Courier: Then grab the kid and put them both in the back of the van. Nobody is missing an eight-hundred-thousand-dollar contract over an old woman.

The muscular courier stepped forward onto the wet gravel, reaching for Lily’s arm.

Clara: Don't you touch her! Step away from my granddaughter!

Courier: Step aside, granny. Don't make this messy.

Before the courier could take another step, two piercing police sirens shrieked through the night air.

Blinding red and blue strobe lights illuminated the tall oak tree
