Mark stood up from his chair so quickly that his oak seat nearly tipped backward.
He slammed his open palm onto the table with a loud, ringing sound.
Mark: Enough!
The loud noise made several guests jump in surprise and drop their glasses.
Margarethe leaned back, startled by the sudden show of pure force from Mark.
Margarethe: Control yourself, Mark! You are making a terrible scene in front of our guests!
Mark: She is my wife! She is not your servant!
Mark stepped around the large table and stood firmly in front of Clara.
He gently took the dirty dishes out of Clara's shaking hands.
He set the plates back down on the white tablecloth with a hard thud.
Mark: You have treated her like trash since the day we got married.
Margarethe: Because she brought no money or prestige to our family name!
Mark: She brought love, honesty, and kindness, which you know nothing about.
Clara wiped a tear from her cheek, looking up at her husband's brave eyes.
Margarethe's face turned bright red with deep rage and total humiliation.
Margarethe: I built this estate, and I demand respect in my own dining room!
Mark: Respect is earned, mother, and today you have lost all of mine.
The guests sat frozen, too afraid to interrupt the intense family confrontation.
Mark grabbed his jacket from the back of his chair with absolute determination.
He knew there was no going back after speaking these strong words out loud.
He was ready to give up his family wealth to protect his own household.
Mark: We are leaving right now, and we are never coming back.
Margarethe: If you walk out that door, I will remove you from my will!
Mark: Keep your money, because it means absolutely nothing to me anymore.
Margarethe gasped loudly, realizing her threat of lost inheritance had failed completely.
