At the top of the sweeping staircase, a heavy wooden door clicked open. Rapid, heavy footsteps sounded along the upper hallway as Daniel hurried toward the balcony. He was a handsome man in his early thirties, dressed in a sharp navy blue tailored suit and a crisp white button-down shirt. As a successful corporate lawyer handling complex estate planning and trust fund litigation, Daniel was used to managing high-stakes crisis situations. But hearing his fiancée screaming in panic inside his own home made his heart race with worry. He hurried down the stairs, his dark eyes scanning the grand foyer below.
Daniel: Chloe! What is happening? Are you hurt?
Chloe instantly darted toward the bottom step, throwing her arms around Daniel's side as soon as his feet touched the main floor. She pointed a trembling, manicured finger toward the soaked woman still sitting among the soapy puddle.
Chloe: Oh, Daniel! It was awful! I simply asked her to work faster, and she flew into a rage!
Daniel: She flew into a rage? What did she do?
Chloe: She threw that dirty scrubbing water right at me! She threatened to hurt me if I complained about her work!
Daniel frowned deeply, looking over Chloe's head at the quiet servant. The old maid was holding her dirty, waterlogged apron in her hands. She remained completely motionless under the bright daylight filling the foyer. There were no signs of aggression on her face, only a profound, heavy sadness in her dark eyes as she stared at the young man standing in his navy suit. Daniel felt a strange, uncomfortable tightness in his chest as he looked closer at the worker. Something about her posture felt strangely familiar, though he could not quite place why a new maid would look at him with such intense personal grief.
Daniel: Ma'am, is this true? Did you throw water and threaten my wife-to-be in my house?
Old Maid: Is that really the story you choose to believe without asking for proof, Daniel?
Daniel stopped in his tracks. The sound of her voice hit him like a physical blow. It was soft, refined, and held an unmistakable cadence that he had known his entire life. The usage of his first name without any formal title made Chloe gasp with outrage, but Daniel could only stand frozen on the bottom step, staring intently at the woman drenched in dirty water.
Chloe: See how rude she is? She called you by your first name! Fire her immediately and call the police!
Daniel: Chloe, wait a second. Just hold on.
Chloe: Hold on for what? She is a dangerous, incompetent servant who ruined the foyer flooring!
The elderly maid did not argue with the screaming young woman. Instead, she slowly raised her wrinkled, wet hands to her head. Underneath the bright, high-key lighting of the entrance, her fingers reached for the edges of the messy grey wig she was wearing. Chloe stopped shouting, her eyebrows knitting together in total confusion as she watched the servant's strange actions. Daniel took an involuntary step forward, his breath catching in his throat as the fabric of the wig rustled quietly in the still air of the mansion.
Daniel: What... what are you doing?
Old Maid: I am removing the mask you both so easily accepted, my son.
