Mark turned away from Victoria for a brief moment to focus entirely on his upset child.
He knelt down on the hard floor next to Lily's small chair and wrapped his arms around her.
Mark: I'm here, sweetheart. Don't cry.
He pulled a clean white handkerchief out of his jacket pocket to wipe the sweet icing away.
Lily hugged her father's neck tightly while continuing to sob against his clean white shirt.
Lily: Daddy, why did that mean lady hurt me?
Mark: She is wrong, Lily, and you did nothing wrong at all.
Victoria stood just a few feet away with her hands resting casually on her narrow hips.
Her husband, Richard Vance, stepped out of the crowd while holding a glass of cheap champagne.
Richard was laughing loudly at the poor child and pointing his finger at Mark's stained suit jacket.
Richard: Look at the mechanic trying to play the protective father figure in public!
Richard: You and your poor kid should have never been allowed inside this building today.
Several of Richard's high-class friends chuckled softly at his harsh and rude comments.
Mark felt a wave of strong anger rise inside his chest as he stood up slowly.
He gently placed Lily behind his back to protect her from any further public humiliation.
Mark: Say one more word about my daughter and see what happens, Richard.
Richard took a slow step forward and tried to block Mark from leaving the main hall area.
Richard: You aren't going anywhere until you apologize to my wife for raising your voice!
Richard reached out a hand to grab Mark's shoulder in an aggressive and threatening manner.
Mark reacted instantly by dodging the hand and shoving Richard backward with immense force.
Richard stumbled backward across the slippery floor and lost his balance completely.
He crashed sideways into the giant five-tier display cake table near the middle of the room.
The tall wooden table tipped over instantly with a loud and dramatic crashing sound.
Shattering glass plates and heavy cake towers rained down onto the expensive carpet floor.
Richard landed flat on his back covered in white icing and ruined strawberry filling.
The crowd of party guests shrieked in shock as the expensive dessert display was ruined.
Victoria screamed out in horror as she looked at her husband lying on the messy ground.
Victoria: You crazy brute, you destroyed the entire party centerpiece!
Mark did not care at all about the ruined food or the social standings of the people around.
He scooped Lily up into his arms and held her close against his chest with strong hands.
Mark: Let's go home, sweetheart, where we are actually respected.
He walked proudly past the screaming crowd toward the grand exit doors of the country club.
