The Locked Room Door

A Wealthy Stepmother Hides The Truth About An Heiress's Missing Will

The morning light streamed through the towering stained glass windows of the Sterling family estate, casting cold shadows across the marble foyer.

Marcus stood in the center of the grand hallway, adjusting his tie while holding his infant daughter securely against his chest.

He had spent three days away in Chicago finalizing a major corporate merger for the family business.

The mansion felt strangely silent for a Tuesday morning, devoid of the usual busy housekeepers and warm breakfast aromas.

Marcus frowned as he shifted his baby girl, Lily, to his left arm.

He expected his wife, Sarah, to run down the stairs to greet them the moment the heavy front doors opened.

Instead, the only person waiting at the bottom of the curved staircase was his stepmother, Victoria.

Victoria adjusted her expensive diamond bracelet and smiled with polished elegance.

She held a crystal glass of red wine despite the early hour of the morning.

Victoria: Welcome home, Marcus darling. I see you brought the precious little heir back safe and sound.

Marcus: Where is Sarah? She usually meets us at the door when we return from a long trip.

Victoria: Sarah is upstairs taking a long nap. She has been exceptionally fragile and tired lately.

Marcus felt a subtle knot of worry twist tight inside his chest.

Sarah was eight months pregnant and had always maintained an active, vibrant routine around the estate.

He stepped past Victoria, heading toward the east wing of the sprawling estate.

Suddenly, a heavy banging sound echoed from the far end of the bright luxury corridor.

It sounded like someone desperately pounding their fists against thick oak wood.

Marcus paused in his tracks, his eyes narrowing as he looked down the long hallway.

A muffled voice called out his name from behind the heavy locked doors of the private study.

Before he could take another step, Victoria stepped into his path with a serene expression.

Victoria: Marcus, leave her be. She is having one of her emotional outbursts again.

Marcus: That is my wife calling for help from inside a locked room, Victoria.

He pushed past his stepmother, his heart pounding hard against his ribs.

The heavy brass lock on the study door was turned firmly from the outside.

Marcus reached out with a trembling hand and unlocked the door, throwing it wide open.

Sarah rushed out into the corridor, gasping for air as tears streamed down her flushed face.

Her blonde hair was disheveled, and dark purple bruises lined her wrists where she had beaten against the frame.

She practically threw herself into Marcus's free arm, sobbing wildly against his tailored suit jacket.

Sarah: Marcus! Oh God, you came back! You need to get us out of this house right now!

Marcus: Sarah, calm down! What happened to you? Who locked you in there?

Sarah: I begged for help and instead they just locked me in that room!
