Mark walked into the quiet Dallas mansion after a long day of work.
He expected to hear his small daughter playing happily in the main living room.
Instead, he heard harsh voices echoing down the wide marble hallway upstairs.
His heart started pounding fast as he recognized his mother's angry tone.
Evelyn Vance was a very wealthy woman who ruled her family with total control.
She had never accepted Mark's late wife or his seven-year-old daughter Lily.
Mark dropped his briefcase onto the floor and moved toward the grand staircase.
He heard small shoes shuffling quickly across the upper floor landing.
Lily: Please, grandmother, I was just looking at the picture!
Evelyn: Do not call me that, you impolite child!
Lily: It has my mommy's face inside the silver locket!
Evelyn: That silver locket belongs to the family estate!
Mark hurried up the stairs two steps at a time to reach them.
He saw Evelyn towering over little Lily near the polished oak railing.
Evelyn was holding the bright silver chain high out of the girl's reach.
Lily was wearing her favorite green dress and crying soft heavy tears.
Mark stepped quickly between his mother and his scared young daughter.
Mark: What is going on here, Evelyn?
Evelyn: Your child sneaked into my private study without asking permission.
Mark: She is seven years old, mother, talk to her gently.
Evelyn: She opened my desk drawer and pulled out valuable jewelry.
Lily: Daddy, the drawer was open and I saw mommy's picture!
Mark wrapped his arm around Lily's small shoulders to comfort her.
He could see how terrified his little girl was right now.
Evelyn stared at them both with cold and distant gray eyes.
Evelyn: She is a liar and a thief, just like her mother was.
Mark: Do not ever speak about my wife that way again.
Evelyn: I run this house, Mark, and I demand absolute honesty here.
Lily: I am not a thief, Daddy, I swear it!
Mark knelt down so he could look directly into Lily's crying face.
He wiped away a warm tear from her soft cheek with his thumb.
Mark: I believe you, sweetie, just stay right behind me.
Evelyn: You always take her side over your own family blood.
Mark: She is my daughter, mother, she IS my family blood.
Evelyn clutched the silver necklace tightly inside her wrinkled right hand.
She turned her back on them and walked toward the master bedroom.
Mark knew this argument was far from over for any of them.
He picked up Lily and held her close against his black jacket.
Something felt very wrong about how Evelyn was acting about that locket.
