Inside The Principal's Office

The door to the principal's office opened, revealing a room lined with dark hardwood oak floors, crisp white crown molding, and bright recessed ceiling lights. A framed painting of the USA flag hung prominently on the main wall behind a massive mahogany desk. Sitting behind the desk was Arthur Sterling, a powerful corporate figure wearing an expensive tailored suit, looking thoroughly unbothered by the emergency summons. Beside him stood Principal Miller, a blonde woman in her late nineties looking extremely anxious and clutching a folder tightly against her ribs.

Principal Miller: Ah, Mrs. Vance, please come in and sit down so we can discuss this quietly.

Rachel: I prefer to stand, Principal Miller. My daughter is severely injured, and I want action.

Arthur: Let us not make a grand scene out of a simple schoolyard accident, madam.

Rachel: An accident? Your son deliberately shoved Maya off the top of the bleachers!

Arthur Sterling slowly leaned back in his leather chair, steepling his fingers with an expression of supreme boredom. He looked at Rachel's practical grey trench coat and simple attire, clearly assuming she was an ordinary working-class mother with limited resources. In his mind, every problem had a price tag, and every person could be bought or intimidated if the offer was high enough. He tapped his pen against the oak wood, signaling to the principal that he would handle the conversation entirely on his own terms.

Arthur: Children play rough, Mrs. Vance. Julian is a spirited boy who sometimes pushes boundaries.

Maya: He pushed me on purpose because I would not give him my homework!

Julian: Shut up, Maya! Nobody asked you to speak!

Rachel: Do not speak to my daughter like that again, Julian. Not another word.

Arthur raised a hand to silence his son, though his gaze remained cold and calculating as he stared at Rachel. He reached inside his jacket, pulled out an elegant dark leather checkbook, and placed it on the desk. Principal Miller looked nervously between Arthur and Rachel, sweating slightly under the bright recessed lights. The school depended heavily on Arthur's massive financial donations, and the principal was clearly terrified of losing his support, even if it meant covering up a serious crime committed on school property.

Arthur: We are busy people, Mrs. Vance. Let us resolve this matter efficiently without lawyers.

Rachel: There is no efficient way to gloss over a broken bone and assault.

Arthur: Nonsense. Everything has a reasonable cost for inconvenience.

Arthur uncapped a gold fountain pen and smoothly slid the blank check forward across the wooden surface, stopping right at the edge of Rachel's side of the desk. He smiled thin-lipped, confident that the temptation of free money would instantly quiet her outrage. Rachel looked down at the paper, then back up at the man who thought he could buy his way out of raising a monster. Her expression remained completely unreadable, hiding the intense storm brewing just beneath her surface.
