The Unexpected Guest In The Dining Room

A Wealthy Boy Secretly Brings Home A Harms-Way Friend

Sarah opened the heavy glass doors of her bright sunlit dining hall.

She stopped instantly in her tracks when she looked at the long mahogany table.

Her ten-year-old son Thomas was sitting next to a frail boy wearing a faded grey hoodie.

Thomas was gently holding a silver spoon, feeding a warm bowl of pasta to the visitor.

Sarah: Thomas! What is that boy doing here?!

Thomas immediately stood up from his chair and looked at his mother with pleading eyes.

Thomas: I invited him, Mom! He hasn't eaten in two days. Please let him eat!

Sarah stepped closer to the table with a quick and nervous breath.

She gasped aloud as she saw the dark marks on the stranger's young pale face.

Sarah: Oh my God... Did Daniel do this to you?!

The young boy in the hoodie lowered his head while tears streamed down his cheeks.

Leo: He took the blows Dad meant for me...

Sarah covered her mouth as a choked sob escaped her throat in the quiet room.

Sarah: Oh God...

She rushed forward and pulled both young boys tightly into her arms.

Sarah: My sweet boys, you're safe here now. Nobody will ever hurt you again.

Thomas held his mother around her waist as he wiped his own eyes.

Thomas: He was hiding in the park near our school after dark, Mom.

Thomas: He was crying because his stepdad Daniel locked him out without any food.

Sarah felt a strong wave of anger burning inside her chest.

Daniel was her former brother-in-law, a selfish man known for his harsh temper.

Sarah: Leo, does your father know where you are right now?

Leo: No, ma'am. I ran away through the back fence when he wasn't looking.

Leo: He said I would lose my mother's life insurance money if I complained.

Sarah looked into Leo's tearful eyes with deep sympathy and sharp concern.

Sarah: Your late mother left that money to protect your future, sweetie.

Sarah: He has no right to touch a single cent of your trust fund.

Thomas looked at his mother with hope shining in his eyes.

Thomas: Can Leo stay in our guest room tonight, Mom?

Sarah: Of course he can stay here, Thomas.

Sarah: He will never have to go back to that awful house again.

She stood up straight and picked up her mobile phone from the light table.

Sarah: I am calling our divorce lawyer and custody attorney right this second.

Leo: Is he going to come here to look for me, Sarah?

Sarah: Let him try, my dear child.

Sarah: He will face the full power of the law if he sets foot on my lawn.

Just as she unlocked her screen, the front doorbell rang through the bright house.
