Julian walked inside the house to answer an urgent phone call regarding his ongoing mortgage application.
Clara stepped toward the outer kitchen for just a brief moment to get Noah a glass of water.
That was the exact mistake she would regret for the rest of her entire life.
Evelyn remained seated on the patio lounge, watching Noah walk near the swimming pool edge.
The backyard was completely silent except for the soft rustling of tall palm trees in the breeze.
A sudden loud splashing sound echoed violently off the hard marble deck and high house walls.
Clara dropped the paper cup instantly and bolted through the open glass doors toward the pool.
Noah's head popped up out of the sparkling water as he gasped frantically for air.
"Mommy, help me! Please help me!" the small boy screamed in complete terror and panic.
Clara did not hesitate for even a second as she ran straight toward the deep water.
She kicked off her heavy shoes and plunged into the cold pool with all her strength.
Her thick wrap dress dragged her down, but she kicked hard toward her terrified weeping son.
She reached Noah quickly and grabbed his small shivering shoulders, pulling his head safely above water.
Noah clung to her neck so tightly that Clara could barely catch her own breath.
She dragged him toward the shallow steps, her heart hammering wildly inside her soaking chest.
When she pulled him out onto the marble floor, she noticed red marks on his upper arm.
Evelyn was still sitting comfortably in her lounge chair, taking another calm sip of her drink.
Her face showed complete indifference, as if nothing alarming had just occurred right in front of her.
"You should really teach your boy how to walk carefully," Evelyn said cold and dryly.
Clara wrapped her arms tightly around Noah, her body shaking from pure rage and disbelief.
"He knows how to walk, Evelyn! What happened out here?" Clara shouted with tears in her eyes.
Noah sobbed loudly against Clara's wet shoulder, trembling uncontrollably from the sudden freezing shock.
Julian rushed back outside through the sliding doors, his dark suit jacket unbuttoned and flapping.
His eyes widened in utter horror when he saw his dripping wet wife and crying son.
"What happened? Is Noah okay?" Julian yelled as he ran down the patio steps quickly.
Noah pointed a small, shaking wet finger directly at the elderly woman sitting in the chair.
"She hit me and threw me in the water!" Noah cried out loud for everyone to hear.
The entire patio fell into a heavy, suffocating silence as Julian froze dead in his tracks.
