Mark rounded the side of the house with his blue button shirt untucked and hair messy.
He stopped instantly when he saw his wife holding their muddy, crying daughter.
His gaze shifted immediately to his mother standing beside the freshly dug hole.
Mark: What in the world is going on out here?
Evelyn: Mark, thank goodness you are finally home to handle this!
Evelyn suddenly dropped to the ground and let out a dramatic, high-pitched scream.
She rubbed her face against the grass to scratch her cheek on purpose.
Evelyn: Clara attacked me when I tried to stop Lily from digging!
Mark: Mom, are you hurt on the ground?
Clara: She is lying to you, Mark! Look at your daughter!
Mark sprinted across the lawn and placed himself directly between the two women.
He looked torn and confused as he stared at his bleeding mother on the grass.
Mark: Clara, did you put your hands on my mother?
Clara: Are you out of your mind? She buried Lily alive!
Mark: WAIT! SHE BELONGED WITH ME!
Mark shouted furiously as he tried to take control of the escalating situation.
His voice echoed loudly across the quiet suburban neighborhood under the bright sunlight.
Lily screamed in terror and hid her face against Clara's neck once again.
Lily: Daddy, don't let grandma touch me again!
Mark: Lily, baby, what did grandma do to you?
Evelyn: I was only trying to discipline her for stealing!
Clara: She didn't steal anything! She heard your dirty legal secrets!
Mark looked down at the silver shovel and the deep pit in the earth.

He stepped closer to Clara and reached out to touch his daughter's shoulder.
Mark: Lily, look at daddy and tell me the truth.
Lily: Grandma locked me in the shed first, daddy.
Mark: She locked you in the garden shed?
Lily: Yes, and then she made me dig the hole.
Evelyn scrambled up from the grass with a panicked expression on her face.
