Panic surged through Sarah's veins like a sudden electric shock. She spun around in circles, her eyes darting across the sea of formal suits and summer dresses inside the marble foyer.
Sarah: Lily? Lily, where are you?
Nobody answered her. The guests continued chatting as if Sarah were completely invisible. Sarah rushed toward the back patio, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. She pushed past a waiter holding a tray of wine glasses, stepping out onto the sunlit patio that overlooked the sprawling green lawn. The lawn stretched out for over an acre, manicured to absolute perfection, leading toward a thick line of oak trees at the boundary of the property. Near the far edge of the grass, beside a heavy decorative iron lamp post, Sarah caught a glimpse of a small white dress. Her heart skipped a beat.
Sarah took a step closer to the edge of the patio stone, squinting her eyes against the bright afternoon daylight. Her daughter was kneeling in the grass beside the metal pole. Sarah gasped as her eyes focused on the terrible detail. A heavy iron chain was wrapped tightly around Lily's small waist, secured with an oversized brass padlock that bound the child to the cold metal post. Lily was crying softly, her small body shaking as dirt smudged her sweet white party dress. Tears had left long dirt tracks down her cheeks as she tried desperately to pull herself away from the pole, but the heavy iron lock held her firmly in place.
Sarah: Oh my God! Lily!
Sarah ran across the grass as fast as her legs could carry her, discarding her heels onto the lawn so she could sprint faster. The sound of her heavy breathing mixed with her frantic footsteps cutting through the manicured grass. She reached the post in seconds and dropped down onto her knees, ignoring the dirt staining her dark pants. Her hands trembled violently as she reached out to grab the cold, heavy padlock that bound her innocent six-year-old child to the post.
Sarah: Mommy is here! Mommy is right here, baby!
Lily: Mommy, help me! It hurts, Mommy!
Sarah: Who did this to you? Who locked you out here by yourself?
Sarah screamed in absolute fury and heartbreak, pulling at the brass lock with all her strength, but the metal did not yield an inch. Her hands turned red and raw as she tried to force the chain open, her chest heaving with desperate gasps of air. Lily looked up at her mother through heavy, tear-filled eyes, clutching her small arms around her shivering body despite the warm afternoon heat.
Lily: Grandma locked me out here... she said I am not allowed inside the big house.
Sarah felt a wave of burning, uncontrollable rage crash over her. She turned her head back toward the mansion patio, her teeth clenched so tightly her jaw hurt. Stepping out through the sliding glass door onto the elevated stone patio stood Evelyn Vance. The older woman wore a crisp, tailored beige pantsuit with styled red-brown hair that did not have a single strand out of place. She held a shiny silver key up high between her fingers, dangling it mockingly in the bright sunlight. Evelyn looked down at Sarah and Lily on the lawn with an expression of pure, unyielding cruelty.
Evelyn: This party is for real members of the Vance family, not for a cheater's kid.
Sarah: Give me that key! Let my daughter go right now!
Evelyn: Come and get it if you dare, Sarah.
Sarah lunged up from the grass, every protective instinct inside her screaming for vengeance as she marched aggressively across the lawn toward the patio where Evelyn stood watching her with a cold, triumphant smile.
