Sarah pushed herself up off the cold hardwood floor, wiping her bloodied mouth with the back of her hand.
The physical pain in her jaw was nothing compared to the sharp ache in her chest.
She stared at the closed back door, hearing the faint sound of Mark's car engine starting outside.
He was taking Lily to his mother's gated estate across town where security guards kept unwanted visitors away.
Mark believed that his family wealth and high-powered legal team made him completely untouchable.
He assumed Sarah would hide in fear, just as she had done during previous arguments.
Instead, Sarah stood straight up, ignoring the dizziness that swept over her vision.
She walked into the downstairs bathroom to wash her face and look at her reflection in the mirror.
Her lip was swollen, but her eyes held a sharp focus that had never been there before.
She grabbed her phone from the kitchen counter and dialed a number she had saved weeks ago.
The call connected on the second ring, bringing a calm female voice to the line.
"Attorney Vance's office, how can I assist you?" the voice asked clearly.
"I need an emergency custody order and a legal protective injunction immediately," Sarah said, her voice steady and resolute.
"Are you in a safe place right now, ma'am?" the legal assistant inquired with immediate concern.
"I am alone, but my husband just took my child by force," Sarah replied clearly.
"Come to our city downtown office right away," the assistant instructed.
Sarah retrieved her purse, took the small tooth from the hallway floor, and wrapped it carefully in a tissue.
She walked out to her car, driving straight toward the county courthouse downtown.
Forty minutes later, Sarah sat inside a bright, private conference room surrounded by wooden bookshelf cases.
Attorney Evelyn Vance, a tall woman with sharp gray eyes, reviewed the photos of Sarah's facial injury.
"This changes everything regarding child custody and exclusive home possession," Vance stated firmly.
"Mark thinks his family business money will shield him from any legal consequences," Sarah noted.
"Money cannot hide documented evidence in a family law court," Vance assured her with confidence.
Vance picked up a fountain pen and began drafting an emergency ex-parte motion for full custody.
"We will file this immediately with the duty judge before the court closes today," Vance explained.
"How long will it take to get my daughter back?" Sarah asked, resting her cold hands on the table.
"If the judge signs this emergency order today, law enforcement will assist us tomorrow morning," Vance answered.
Sarah felt a wave of relief wash over her body as she nodded in agreement.
Meanwhile, across town, Mark sat inside his mother's luxury mansion living room, feeling completely victorious.
He poured a glass of ice water and checked his phone, expecting frantic text messages from Sarah.
When no messages arrived, a subtle seed of suspicion began to take root in his mind.
He called his personal family lawyer, Arthur Pendelton, to brag about securing the child.
"Arthur, I have Lily at my mother's property," Mark declared into the receiver.
"Did Sarah agree to this arrangement in writing?" Arthur asked, his voice instantly cautious.
"She didn't have a choice," Mark replied with a harsh laugh.
"Mark, if she goes to the police or a judge, you are in serious legal trouble," Arthur warned sternly.
"She won't do anything, she has no money and no courage," Mark dismissed carelessly.
He hung up the phone, unaware that Sarah was standing inside a judge's chambers at that exact moment.
