Claire clutched her belly tightly, tears streaming freely down her flushed cheeks.
Mark felt her heart hammering wildly against his own trembling chest.
He checked her arms and legs for injuries, breathing a heavy sigh of relief.
She was miraculously unharmed thanks to his quick, decisive heroics.
High above on the balcony, Evelyn stared down in complete silence and terror.
She gripped the remaining edge of the white railing with trembling hands.
Evelyn: No... impossible!
Mark raised his head and glared up at his mother with scorching fury.
All remaining respect he had for her vanished completely in that single moment.
Mark: You monster!
Evelyn took a slow step backward, her mouth opening and closing silently.
She tried to speak, but no words could excuse what had just occurred.
Mark reached into his suit jacket and pulled out his cell phone quickly.
His fingers dialed the emergency digits without a single second of hesitation.
Claire wrapped her arms around his waist, resting her head on his shoulder.
Claire: Mark, I was so scared.
Mark: Shh, I've got you, you're safe now.
He pressed the phone firmly against his ear, staring cold eyes at Evelyn.
The line connected immediately with a sharp dial tone ringing through the speaker.
Mark: 911, send the police and an ambulance immediately!
Evelyn raised her hands in panic as she watched her son talk to emergency operators.
Evelyn: Mark, please, it was an accident!
Mark: My mother just tried to murder my wife!
The high-stakes emergency dispatcher quickly confirmed the estate's street address.
Mark gave clear details while keeping his arm securely wrapped around Claire.
Evelyn backed away down the upper corridor, looking around for an escape route.
She realized her wealth and status could no longer shield her from justice.
Sirens began echoing far off in the city streets, growing louder every second.
The truth of her cruel actions was finally exposed beyond any doubt.
