Secrets Held Up High

A Mother Discovers Her Secret DNA Test Inside Grand Mansion

The brown paper envelope remained balanced precariously on the high balcony ledge.

Evelyn rested her palms on the stone rail, staring down like a judge.

David shifted little Leo in his arms, holding him close to his chest.

The baby cooed softly, oblivious to the high tension filling the foyer.

David: Hand over those papers right now, Mom, or I walk away forever.

Evelyn: You will not walk away from a forty-million-dollar inheritance, David.

Sarah: We do not care about your money if it comes with poison!

Evelyn: You say that now because you have nothing to lose, Sarah.

Sarah: I have my family, which is worth more than this entire house.

Evelyn let out a bitter, quiet laugh that echoed around the high ceiling.

She lifted the brown envelope and pointed it straight down at Sarah.

Evelyn: You entered this family three years ago with empty hands and secrets.

Sarah: I brought honesty and love, which this place severely lacked before.

David: Sarah has been the best thing that ever happened to me, Mom.

Evelyn: She blinded you with affection while rewriting your father's final will.

Sarah's eyes widened in disbelief at the harsh accusation thrown from above.

Sarah: I never touched your husband's legal documents or his life insurance!

Evelyn: My lawyer found the amendments submitted just two weeks before he passed.

David: Father changed those documents himself because he trusted Sarah's advice!

Evelyn: He was sick and confused when he signed those papers in hospital.

Sarah stepped onto the bottom step of the sweeping marble staircase.

Sarah: Your husband was completely clear-headed when he asked for my help.

Evelyn: Do not lie about a deceased man in his own living room!

David: She isn't lying, Mom, because I was in the room too.

Evelyn froze on the balcony as her son's words hit her ears.

She tightened her grip on the envelope until the paper creaked loudly.

Evelyn: You knew about the change in the family trust distribution?

David: I signed as a legal witness alongside our family attorney that day.

Evelyn: That trust was created to protect the Vance legacy for generations!

Sarah: It was created to protect people, not just money inside banks.

Evelyn adjusted her blue suit jacket, trying to regain her usual composure.

She looked down at the paper in her hand with a sharp glare.

Evelyn: That still does not explain the lab results inside this envelope.

Sarah: What lab results could you possibly have obtained without my permission?

Evelyn: I have connections at the central diagnostic laboratory in downtown Dallas.

David: You bribed someone to run tests on blood samples from the clinic?

Evelyn: I paid for accuracy because I refused to live under a doubt.

Sarah felt a surge of fury rising from deep within her chest.

Sarah: You invaded our privacy and tampered with medical records for revenge!

Evelyn: I did it to expose the truth before you took everything.

David: There is no truth to expose except your own bitter jealousy!

Evelyn: Look at the envelope, David, and tell me you don't care.

David looked down at his sleeping son and then back up top.

David: I know who my son is without a piece of paper.

Evelyn: Then you won't mind if I read these results out loud.

Sarah took two fast steps up the stairs toward the second floor.

Sarah: Stop right there before you make the biggest mistake ever!
