Isabella stepped into the sunlit room, her long champagne satin gown sweeping gracefully across the pristine wood floor. Her dark hair was styled into a flawless bun, and a heavy diamond necklace glittered against her throat. In her right hand, she held a small, silver key attached to a velvet ribbon. Her face, usually locked in a calm, distant expression, tightened into a look of absolute fury the moment her eyes landed on Clara sitting on the floor with Ethan wrapped in her arms.
Isabella: What do you think you are doing, Clara?
Isabella's voice was sharp, cutting through the emotional quiet of the room like a blade. She walked forward slowly, the sharp heels of her designer shoes clicking loudly against the hard floor with every step. She stopped just two feet away from where Clara sat holding the terrified child. Clara looked up, her arms tightening around Ethan defensively. She could feel the boy trembling uncontrollably against her chest, hiding his small face in the crook of her neck to avoid looking at his stepmother.
Clara: Mrs. Sterling, he was locked inside the wall vent! He could barely breathe in there!
Isabella: That is none of your concern. You are hired to clean this house, not to poke your nose into family matters that do not involve a servant.
Clara: A child was trapped behind a painting! This is a crime, Mrs. Sterling! I had to help him!
Isabella raised her chin, looking down her nose at the maid with complete contempt. She held up the small silver key, letting it catch the bright daylight streaming through the tall windows. Her cold eyes fixed on Clara with a threat that required no imagination to understand. She did not show a single drop of guilt or worry about the boy's safety; her only annoyance was that her hidden plan had been interrupted by a house cleaner.
Isabella: You will put him back into that space right now, Clara. Put him back, and I may let you keep your job and forget this little incident ever happened.
Clara: You are insane! I am not putting a child back into a dark wall!
Isabella: If you walk out of that door with him, I will call the police and tell them you tried to kidnap my stepson. Who do you think they will believe? A wealthy woman of high society, or a maid with five hundred dollars in her bank account?
Clara swallowed hard, her chest tight with fear. She knew Isabella had immense power, money, and influence in the city. The Sterling family name opened every door, while Clara was just a worker living paycheck to paycheck in a small studio apartment. But as she looked down at Ethan, who was clutching her grey uniform so tightly his knuckles were white, Clara knew she could never obey Isabella's cruel command. She was not going to let this boy be tortured, no matter what it cost her own life or career.
Ethan: Please don't leave me, Clara. Don't let her lock me up again.
Clara: I won't leave you, Ethan. I promise you, I am not letting go of you.
Isabella took a sharp step forward, her hand reaching out to grab Ethan's thin arm. Her long, red-painted nails looked like claws in the bright sunlight. Clara shifted her body, blocking Isabella's hand and pushing the woman's arm away with her shoulder. Isabella gasped in shock at being touched by a maid, her cheeks flushing red with anger as she stepped back and pointed a finger at Clara's face.
Isabella: How dare you lay a hand on me! You are finished in this town, Clara! You will be in handcuffs before the sun sets today!
Clara: Then call them! Call the police right now and show them where you had Ethan trapped! Let us see what the officers say when they look inside that vent!
Isabella hesitated for a brief second, her eyes flicking toward the dark hole in the wall where the metal cover lay twisted on the floor. Her hand tightened around the silver key until her knuckles turned pale. She knew that involving the police would cause a massive public scandal, something her delicate social standing could not survive. She needed to handle this internally before her husband returned from his corporate meeting in the afternoon.
Isabella: Give me the boy, Clara. This is your final warning. You do not understand what is at stake here. This business, this house, the entire inheritance belongs to this family, and I will not let a brat ruin everything I have built.
Clara: He is a seven-year-old child! He is not a threat to your money!
Isabella: He is David's biological heir! As long as he is here, my own children get nothing from the estate trust fund! Now hand him over before I force you!
Isabella raised her hand again, stepping forward with total determination to yank the boy out of Clara's lap. Clara braced herself, wrapping her legs around Ethan to form a human shield over him. But before Isabella could grab the boy, the massive oak doors of the living room flew open again with a heavy thud. Standing in the entrance was David Sterling, dressed in a sharp black tuxedo from his morning board meeting, his face pale as paper as his eyes took in the scene before him.
