Eleanor stood near the long kitchen counter with her hands resting on her hips.
Her emerald green dress sparkled beneath the overhead glass chandelier lights.
She pointed an angry finger across the counter at Sarah.
Eleanor: Fine! Spotted and caught red-handed!
The ambient chatter in the room instantly died down to complete silence.
Every guest turned their head to look directly at the heated scene.
Sarah stood near the edge of the counter looking pale and overwhelmed.
She was holding her two-year-old sleeping son snugly against her shoulder.
The toddler rested his heavy head on Sarah's sequined dress.
Tears welled up in Sarah's soft brown eyes as she stood defenseless.
Sarah: Eleanor, please, this is a misunderstanding.
Eleanor: Do not dare call it a misunderstanding in my house!
Mark pushed his way gently through the standing crowd of guests.
His heart hammered hard against his ribs as he reached his wife's side.
Mark: What is going on here, Mother?
Eleanor: Ask your wife what she has been doing back here!
Mark looked down at the massive kitchen sink right beside Sarah.
It was piled high with greasy pots, dirty plates, and unwashed glasses.
Soapy water was overflowing onto the polished marble granite edges.
Eleanor raised her voice even louder so the entire room could hear.
Eleanor: She abandoned her duties and left this huge mess for my guests to see!
Mark: Sarah is a guest here today, Mother, not your personal housekeeper!
Eleanor: She offered to help, yet she sits around doing nothing!
Sarah shifted her weight carefully so she would not wake her resting toddler.
A quiet tear escaped her eye and trickled down her pale cheek.
Sarah: Leo fell ill and had a fever, Eleanor.
Sarah: I had to rock him to sleep in the quiet room downstairs.
Eleanor: That is just a convenient excuse for laziness!
Mark stepped directly between his mother and his tearful wife.
Mark: That is enough, Eleanor!
Mark: You will not speak to my wife like that ever again!
The guests standing around the island gasped softly at Mark's sudden outburst.
Eleanor crossed her arms tight and glared back with cold condescension.
