Mark stood up slowly, keeping his eyes fixed entirely on his mother's pale face.
The marble foyer was dead silent except for the sound of their heavy breathing.
Elena kept her arm protectively around little Lily, who watched everything with wide eyes.
"You have been lying to us for months," Elena said softly, stepping closer to Mark.
"I gave you a place to live in this house," Evelyn sneered back at her.
"You gave us a room while trying to strip away my rights," Elena countered bravely.
Mark looked down at the brown envelope resting securely inside his warm right hand.
He noticed the official seal of the state family court stamped across the corner.
Evelyn reached the bottom step and held out a trembling, thin hand toward him.
"Mark, please, that is private family business," Evelyn pleaded, her voice cracking slightly.
"If it involves Lily, then it is my business too," Mark answered very firmly.
He had spent years trusting his mother without ever asking a single difficult question.
He believed that Evelyn was only trying to protect the family trust and estate.
Now he saw the sheer panic in her blue eyes, and everything felt wrong.
The police officer who had accompanied the lawyer stepped forward into the bright room.
"Sir, those documents were legally delivered to this address," the officer stated clearly.
"She tried to hide them before we could see them," Elena told the officer.
Evelyn raised her head high, trying desperately to regain her usual calm composure.
"I am the head of this estate and this house," Evelyn claimed with authority.
"Not if you committed fraud," Mark snapped back, breaking the official red wax seal.
Evelyn let out a sharp cry and stepped forward to stop him from reading.
The guard gently stepped between Evelyn and Mark to keep the peace safely.
Mark pulled out three crisp pages of legal paper written in thick black ink.
His eyes scanned the top lines quickly as his brow furrowed in deep confusion.
The header listed a court case regarding biological paternity and legal custody status.
Elena held her breath, waiting for the truth to finally break into the open.
She had suspected Evelyn was tampering with official records for a very long time.
Every time a legal notice arrived, Evelyn had intercepted the mail at once.
Mark read the second paragraph out loud so everyone in the room could hear.
"The original adoption decree was altered without the consent of the mother," he read.
Evelyn closed her eyes tightly as a quiet tear slid down her cheek.
Mark looked up from the paper with absolute shock registered across his face.
"What did you do, Mother?" Mark demanded, his voice echoing off the walls.
