The morning of the wedding arrived with bright, flawless sunshine pouring through the high hotel windows.
Mark adjusted his dark velvet bow tie in the mirror of the bridal suite holding room.
His best man, David, clapped him warmly on the shoulder with a wide, friendly grin.
David: You look ready, brother. Today starts a whole new chapter for you and Lily.
Mark: I just want Lily to feel safe and loved today, David.
Mark walked down the hallway to check on his daughter and future bride in the dressing room.
As he approached the heavy wooden door, he heard low, hushed voices speaking inside.
He paused near the entrance when he caught the distinct sound of Lily sniffling softly.
Vanessa: Stop moving around like that! You are going to ruin this expensive silk lace!
Lily: My hair pin is poking me real hard, Miss Vanessa.
Vanessa: Stand still and hush! You are making me look bad in front of the photographer!
Mark felt a sudden prickle of anxiety tighten at the back of his neck.
He pushed the heavy door open slightly and looked inside the sunlit dressing room.
Vanessa was aggressively tugging at Lily's blonde hair while fixing a decorative satin ribbon ribbon.
Lily was fighting back small tears, her tiny hands clutching the edge of her matching dress.
Mark: Hey, what is going on in here? Is everything alright?
Vanessa instantly changed her sharp tone, turning toward Mark with a sweet, relaxed smile.
Vanessa: Oh, everything is totally fine, darling! Lily is just a little nervous about walking out.
Mark stepped into the room and gently knelt down beside his small, trembling daughter.
He wiped a small tear from Lily's cheek with the thumb of his clean hand.
Mark: Are you okay, sweetie? Do you want to take a short break?
Lily: I want my daddy. My dress feels too tight around my ribs.
Vanessa stepped forward quickly, inserting herself between Mark and the young child.
Vanessa: Mark, please do not coddle her right now. We have two hundred guests arriving.
Mark stared into Vanessa's eyes, noticing a cold hardness he had never seen before.
He felt an uncomfortable knot forming deep inside his chest as he stood back up.
Mark: Her comfort matters more than keeping a strict timeline, Vanessa.
Vanessa: This is my wedding day, Mark! Everything must look completely perfect!
Mark swallowed hard, trying to keep his growing anger from erupting in front of Lily.
He decided to take Lily into the hallway to get a glass of fresh water.
As they walked out, he felt a strange sense of dread settle over his mind.
He realized that Vanessa's polished exterior was slowly beginning to crack open completely.
He resolved to keep a very close eye on his daughter throughout the entire afternoon.
