The Unwelcome Return Home

The bright Texas sun beamed down on the long dirt driveway leading up to the historic family estate. Clara sat in the driver seat of her dusty sedan, her hands gripping the leather steering wheel until her knuckles turned bone white. In the backseat, her baby boy Leo slept soundly inside his infant car seat, wrapped tightly in a soft blue blanket. Clara looked into the rearview mirror, checking on her three-month-old child, feeling her heart pound heavily against her ribs.

She had not stepped foot on this property in over three years, not since her father passed away after a sudden illness. Her father had owned a prosperous oil transport business, leaving behind a massive estate, a luxurious mansion, and a life insurance policy worth millions. But after his death, Clara’s stepmother Evelyn took control of every single asset, pushing Clara out of the family business with cold calculation. Clara had moved away to build a quiet, independent life, wanting nothing to do with Evelyn or her greedy stepbrother Marcus.

However, everything changed two days ago when a letter arrived from her father's long-time divorce lawyer. The letter revealed a sealed codicil in her father's original will that named little Leo as the direct heir to the family's original land deed. This piece of land was worth a small fortune because an energy corporation wanted to lease it for millions. Evelyn and Marcus needed Clara's signature to sell the land, but Clara refused to sign away her child's future. Now, she was here to tell them face to face that the property belonged to her son.

Clara took a deep breath, unbuckled her seatbelt, and walked around to carefully lift Leo into her arms. Cradling the infant against her chest, she walked up the grand stone steps toward the heavy oak front doors of the mansion. Before she could even ring the doorbell, the door swung open violently. Standing on the glossy hardwood floor inside was Evelyn, dressed in an extravagant silver sequin dress despite it being early afternoon. Beside her stood Marcus, wearing an expensive dark suit with a fake, predatory smile plastered across his face.

Evelyn: Look who finally decided to crawl back home to ask for money.

Clara: I am not here for your money, Evelyn. I came to tell you to stop calling my lawyer.

Marcus: Come on inside, little sister. Let us talk like reasonable adults about the land lease.

Clara: There is nothing to talk about, Marcus. My father left that trust fund to my son, not you.

Evelyn: Your father was weak in his final days, Clara. He did not know what he was signing.

Clara: He knew exactly what he was doing. He wanted to make sure you didn't steal everything.

Marcus stepped onto the porch, blocking Clara’s exit while Evelyn stood behind him with her arms crossed tightly over her sequined chest. The grand entrance hall behind them was filled with several local board members and legal consultants whom Evelyn had invited to witness what she assumed would be a quick agreement. Instead, tension filled the cool air as Clara held her baby tighter, sensing that stepping into the house was a trap she might not easily escape.
