The Unannounced Return Home

A Father Returns Home To Protect His Daughter From Betrayal

General Arthur Davis adjusted his crisp military dress uniform before stepping out of his grey sedan.

The afternoon sun reflected off the large glass windows of the grand white mansion standing before him.

He had spent thirty years serving his country across the globe with pride and deep honor.

His long service taught him how to spot trouble long before anyone said a single word.

Today, he was visiting his pregnant daughter Claire to check on her overall health and well-being.

Claire was seven months pregnant with her very first child and needed all the calm support possible.

Arthur noticed two unfamiliar dark cars parked inside the wide circular brick driveway of the property.

He walked up the front marble stairs with firm steps and rang the polished brass doorbell twice.

Nobody answered the door for several minutes despite the loud chime echoing deep inside the hallway.

Arthur reached into his pocket and used his old emergency brass key to open the front lock.

The heavy front door swung open silently into the quiet, cool marble entrance of the mansion.

He heard faint raised voices coming from the second floor bedroom area down the main corridor.

Arthur walked quietly up the plush carpeted stairs while keeping his eyes focused on the top floor.

He noticed several moving boxes stacked along the side hallway near his daughter's private home office.

His daughter Claire had inherited this historic estate from her late mother five short years ago.

The entire property was held in a secure family trust fund designed to protect her future.

Arthur reached the master bedroom door and found it pushed slightly open into the darkened room.

He saw his son-in-law Grant standing near the foot of the massive wooden frame bed.

Grant was speaking loudly to an older woman who held several legal files in her hands.

Claire was sitting up against the soft white pillows with tears streaming down her pale cheeks.

She looked exhausted and completely emotionally drained from whatever argument had been happening before he arrived.

Arthur pushed the heavy door open completely and stepped into the center of the large room.

The room suddenly grew dead silent as everyone turned around to look at the army officer.

Arthur looked directly at his crying daughter and felt his protective instincts kick in immediately.

General Davis: What is going on in this house right now?

Grant: Arthur! We did not expect you back in town until next week.

Claire: Dad... please help me. They are trying to take everything away from me.

Grant: Claire is just confused and overly emotional today because of her growing pregnancy.

General Davis: I am speaking to my daughter, Grant, not to you.

Arthur walked past Grant and sat down gently on the edge of the soft mattress.

He placed his warm, firm hand over Claire's small trembling fingers to reassure her safety.

Claire squeezed his hand tightly while fighting back another heavy sob from breaking out loud.

General Davis: Tell me everything from the beginning, Claire.

Claire: Grant brought his mother here to force me into signing my estate over.

Grant: That is a complete lie and you know it!

General Davis: Silence, Grant! Let her speak without your interruptions.

Arthur looked at Grant with cold grey eyes that had commanded entire units of brave soldiers.

Grant took two quick steps backward toward his mother near the open master bathroom door.

The air inside the master bedroom felt heavy with unsaid truths waiting to come out.

Arthur knew right then that his daughter was facing a terrible betrayal inside her home.

He was determined to discover every single detail of what had happened while he was away.
