Three months passed before the final court hearing took place at the downtown county courthouse building.
The grand courtroom was filled with quiet oak pews and bright brass light fixtures along walls.
Mark sat proudly at the front table wearing his crisp blue suit alongside his legal defense team.
Sarah sat across the room with her lawyer while looking down at the wooden table in shame.
The judge carefully reviewed the pile of evidence showing the forged signature documents and financial theft.
"The evidence of criminal fraud and reckless child neglect is overwhelming," the judge announced sternly.
He slammed his heavy wooden gavel down on the marble desk with a loud sharp strike.
"Full physical custody of both children is granted exclusively to the father, Mark," the judge ruled.
"Furthermore, all stolen trust fund assets must be returned to the children's accounts immediately," he added.
Mark felt a wave of pure relief wash over his chest as he stood up to shake Arthur's hand.
Sarah was led away by courtroom security to answer separate criminal charges regarding the bank loan fraud.
Mark walked out of the courthouse into the bright morning sunshine where his children were waiting happily.
Emily was off her wooden crutches now and running freely across the green park grass nearby.
She held baby Tommy's small hand as he took his very first steps along the paved walkway.
Mark knelt down on the grass with open arms as both of his kids ran straight into him.
"We did it, daddy! We are going home now!" Emily cheered while laughing happily in the sunlight.
"Yes, sweetie. We are going home, and nothing will ever break our family apart again," Mark smiled.
He picked up both of his children and held them tight against his warm beating heart.
The dark days of fear and betrayal were finally behind them as a bright new chapter began.
They had faced the hardest storm together and come out stronger on the other side as one.
