Mark pulled his silver sedan into the long concrete driveway of his suburban mansion.
The afternoon sun reflected off the large glass windows of the quiet home.
He stepped out of the car and grabbed his leather briefcase from the back seat.
His business trip to Chicago had ended earlier than his calendar had originally scheduled.
He wanted to surprise his six-year-old son, Toby, with a new wooden toy train set.
Mark unlocked the heavy front double doors and stepped inside the grand foyer floor.
A strange, high-pitched crying sound immediately echoed down the quiet main hallway corridor.
He dropped his heavy leather briefcase onto the decorative floor mat near the entrance.
His heart started pounding against his chest as the frantic shouting grew much louder.
Mark rushed down the smooth hallway toward the sound of his crying young son.
He rounded the corner and saw his wife, Sarah, standing near the coat closet.
She was holding Toby tightly by his upper arm while he tried to pull away.
Toby was sobbing loudly, his small face completely covered in hot, heavy tears.
Mark felt a sudden wave of intense shock freeze his body in the hallway.
Mark: What on earth are you doing to him right now?
Sarah: Mark, you surprised us by coming home early today!
Mark: Let go of his arm right now, Sarah!
Sarah immediately dropped her hands and took a quick step back toward the wall.
Toby immediately ran straight toward his father and wrapped his arms around Mark's legs.
Toby: Daddy, you came back home just in time!
Mark: I am right here, buddy, you are completely safe now.
Mark lifted his young son into his arms and held him very tightly.
He glared at Sarah, who was hastily smoothing down her bright red designer dress.
Her face looked pale, but her sharp blue eyes remained calm and cold.
Sarah: He was throwing a massive temper tantrum over his tablet screen time.
Sarah: I was simply taking him to his room for a short timeout.
Mark: You do not handle a upset child by scaring him like that.
Sarah: You are completely misinterpreting a basic discipline moment in our own home.
Mark looked down at Toby's red face and noticed his small shirt was stretched out.
Something felt terribly wrong inside the house that he had built for his family.
