Three months later, the trial concluded inside the county courthouse after three days of testimony.
The judge sat high on the bench, reviewing the final financial audits and the clear security footage.
Evelyn sat at the defense table wearing a plain gray jumpsuit, her hair pulled back tightly.
She kept her head down, refusing to look at the gallery where Mark sat quietly near the front row.
The judge cleared his throat and looked directly at the legal team representing the defense.
"The evidence presented in this courtroom is overwhelming and deeply disturbing," the judge stated firmly.
"The defendant systematically attempted to strip a young child of her rightful inheritance," he continued.
"Furthermore, her actions on the balcony demonstrated a complete disregard for human life," the judge added.
The judge declared a verdict of guilty on all counts, revoking her bail immediately without exception.
He sentenced Evelyn to fifteen years in state prison without the possibility of early parole.
He also granted Mark full legal and physical custody of Lily, revoking all of Evelyn's stepmother rights.
Mark let out a long, quiet breath as the gavel struck the wooden block with a loud boom.
He walked out of the courtroom into the bright hallway, where David was waiting with a smile.
"It is officially over, Mark," David said, shaking his hand warmly near the heavy oak doors.
"You protected your daughter and saved your family estate from total ruin," David added quietly.
Mark nodded, feeling a deep sense of relief settle into his heart for the first time in months.
He drove back to the house where his sister was watching Lily in the sunlit backyard garden.
Lily ran across the green grass as soon as she saw her father's car pull up the drive.
"Daddy!" she cheered, throwing her small arms around his legs as he knelt down to greet her.
Mark pulled her tight into a warm hug, smelling the soft sweet scent of flower petals in her hair.
The terrible shadows that had hung over their home had finally cleared away for good.
