Richard burst through the bottom doors into the grand marble foyer.
His navy suit jacket flapped against his legs as he moved with speed.
Richard: Hey! Get your hands off her right now!
Victoria spun around quickly, her eyes wide with sudden surprise.
She was still holding onto Lily's arm with a firm grip.
Victoria: Richard, stay out of this right now!
Victoria: She was being disobedient and ruined my dress!
Lily: Daddy! Help me please!
Richard stepped forcefully between Victoria and his little girl.
He used his shoulder to push Victoria back several feet.
He knelt down instantly and wrapped his strong arms around Lily.
The little girl sobbed heavily into his navy suit jacket.
Richard: Are you okay, sweetheart? Talk to me.
Lily: Daddy, she pulled my hair and squeezed my arm really hard!
Lily: I just accidentally spilled water near her shoes!
Richard felt an overwhelming surge of anger deep in his chest.
He looked down at Lily's tiny red wrist and saw clear marks.
He looked back up at Victoria with complete disbelief and disappointment.
Victoria adjusted her velvet red gown and glared right back at him.
Victoria: She needs discipline, Richard, and you spoil her constantly!
Richard: You crossed a line in this house today, Victoria.
Victoria: I am your wife, and I demand respect in this mansion!
Richard: Respect is earned, and you just lost every bit of it.
Lily clutched her father's hand as if holding onto a lifeline.
The large foyer felt completely silent except for Lily's soft breathing.
Richard stood up to his full height in front of the flag.
He knew his marriage was effectively over in that exact moment.
