Mark walked back into the bright main hallway where Emily was waiting calmly.
She was sitting on the thick rug holding her little brother close now.
Mark knelt beside her again and patted her soft blonde hair gently.
Mark: You were so brave today, Emily. I am so proud of you.
Emily: Is Mommy mad at us because I spoke to you?
Mark: No, sweetie. You did the exact right thing by telling me.
He helped Emily stand up carefully using her strong steel braces.
He guided her safely into the cozy guest bedroom on the main floor.
Mark: Stay here with your brother while I sort this out, okay?
Emily: Okay, Daddy. Please do not leave the house without us.
Mark: I am not going anywhere without you two, ever.
Mark closed the bedroom door gently and walked upstairs to Victoria's private study.
The room was locked tight, just as it usually was every afternoon.
Mark used his master spare key to unlock the polished brass door handle.
He stepped inside and walked straight over to the heavy oak desk.
He opened the top drawer and searched through the organized paper folders.
Near the back, he found a thick brown envelope marked with red ink.
He opened the envelope and pulled out several thick legal contracts inside.
The documents detailed a plan to take full control of the trust fund.
There was also a forged signature with his own name written at the bottom.
Mark: She actually forged my signature on official legal documents.
Suddenly, the study door swung open wide behind his back.
Victoria stood in the doorway with tears of frustration in her eyes.
Victoria: Put those back right now, Mark! You had no right to look!
Mark: You committed bank fraud and endangered our children for money!
Victoria: I needed that money to pay off my brother's massive debt!
Mark gasped as the last piece of the puzzle finally made complete sense.
Mark: Your brother? The one who disappeared two whole years ago?
Victoria: He was in deep trouble, Mark! I had no choice!
Mark: You chose a lie over your own daughter and baby son!
Victoria reached out to take the papers from his hands again.
Victoria: Give them to me! We can handle this without police!
Mark held the folder high above his head out of her reach.
Mark: No, Victoria. This ends right here and right now.
He walked past her into the hallway while holding the crucial evidence tight.
He knew what he had to do to keep his family completely safe.
