David did not waste another second arguing with Evelyn in the foyer.
He ran out the front door and placed Maya gently in the back seat of his car.
He started the engine and drove toward the hospital at full speed.
His hands gripped the leather steering wheel until his knuckles turned white.
He kept checking his rear view mirror to look at his little girl.
David: Hold on little girl, daddy is getting you help right now.
He pulled up to the emergency room entrance in record time.
He jumped out of the car and yelled for the medical team inside.
Two nurses ran out immediately with a fast metal gurney rolling behind them.
They placed Maya on the white bed and pushed her through the double doors.
David ran right alongside the gurney while holding his daughter's cold hand.
David: Please save my daughter, she is everything I have!
Doctor: We are taking her to trauma unit four right now, sir.
The sliding doors shut tightly, leaving David standing alone in the quiet hallway.
He slumped into a plastic chair and buried his face in his trembling hands.
He could not get the image of Evelyn's cold face out of his mind.
Evelyn married David's wealthy father three years before his father passed away.
She had always acted nice to David, but she loved money more than people.
A few minutes later, a young police officer walked down the hallway toward David.
The officer took out a small black notebook and sat down in the chair nearby.
Officer: Mr. Carter, we received a call about an incident at your residence.
David: My stepmother was on the balcony when my daughter fell off.
Officer: Did you see her push the little girl, sir?
David paused because he knew he needed to speak the absolute truth.
David: I saw her standing right over Maya before the fall happened.
Officer: We will send an investigator to inspect the house right away.
David nodded slowly as the officer walked away to make a phone call.
He knew in his heart that this was not a simple accident at all.
