Restoring The Family Home

A Father Discovers What His New Wife Did In Secret

Mark closed the heavy oak front door and locked every single deadbolt lock tightly in place.

The foyer was finally silent again, bathed in the soft golden rays of the late afternoon sun.

Mark walked slowly up the white marble staircase and knocked gently on his daughter's bedroom door.

Mark: Sweetheart, it is Daddy, you can come out into the hall now, everything is fine.

The bedroom door clicked open, and Lily stepped out into the hallway wearing her bright pink skirt.

She looked around the empty hallway with soft, questioning eyes and held her breath quietly.

Lily: Is she really gone for good this time, Daddy?

Mark: She is gone forever, Lily, and she will never step foot inside our home again.

Lily let out a long breath of relief and wrapped her small arms tightly around Mark's waist.

Mark scooped her up into his arms and carried her down to the warm, bright living room.

He sat down on the soft grey sofa and placed the brown paper envelope on the table.

Together, they carefully opened the envelope and checked each page of the late mother's legal trust.

Every single document was perfectly intact, unhurt by the close fall near the staircase railing earlier.

Mark smoothed out the creased edges of the paper and placed them safely back inside the box.

Mark: Tomorrow morning, we are taking these straight to the main city bank for safe keeping.

Lily: Can we put Mommy's picture back on the wall near the front stairs now?

Mark: That is the absolute first thing we are going to do right this very second.

They walked over to the wooden hall cabinet where Vanessa had hidden the old family frames.

Mark took out the large silver frame showing his late wife smiling brightly on a summer beach.

He carried a small brass nail and a hammer to the top landing near the large flag.

With three soft taps of the hammer, Mark secured the photo frame firmly back onto the wall.

Lily stood beside him, holding her father's hand tightly as she looked up at the picture.

Lily: It looks so much brighter in here now that the picture is back where it belongs.

Mark: This home will always belong to you and me, no matter what happens in life.

Mark looked down at his daughter and smiled, feeling a deep peace return to his chest.
