The Fall on the Stairs

A Father Discovers The Truth About His New Wife

Clara adjusted her crisp white apron before taking a deep breath.

The sun streamed through the towering windows of the sprawling lakeside mansion.

Everything inside the house sparkled under the bright morning light.

Clara had worked as a nanny for the Vance family for nearly three years.

She loved little Lily like her own daughter.

The sweet toddler was the center of Clara's entire world.

Adrian Vance was a wealthy real estate developer who adored his young daughter.

His first wife had passed away two years ago after a sudden illness.

Since then, Adrian had focused entirely on his business and his child.

That was until Elena entered their lives six months ago.

Elena was young, glamorous, and always wore designer dresses.

She moved into the estate quickly after marrying Adrian in a private ceremony.

Clara always felt a cold distance coming from the new wife.

Elena rarely spoke to the house staff unless she was giving sharp demands.

She seemed especially cool toward little Lily whenever Adrian was not around.

Clara placed the baby gently inside the customized stroller.

Elena: Make sure she is ready for her checkup on time.

Clara: Yes, Mrs. Vance, everything is packed.

Clara began pushing the stroller carefully toward the top of the grand marble staircase.

The polished white steps stretched down to the sunlit foyer below.

Elena walked right behind Clara, her golden dress rustling softly against the floor.

Clara focused on keeping her hands firmly on the handle of the heavy carriage.

Suddenly, Clara felt a firm shove directly between her shoulder blades.

Her foot slipped off the edge of the smooth top step.

Clara gasped in terror as her balance failed completely.

The stroller shot forward down the steep flight of stone stairs.

Clara did not think about her own body or the hard stone waiting below.

She threw herself forward, tumbling down the steps to reach the runaway handles.

The sound of metal echoing against marble filled the giant entrance hall.

Clara hit the bottom floor with a violent thud that knocked the air from her lungs.

Despite the sharp pain in her ribs, she scrambled forward on her knees.

She locked her fingers around the frame right before the carriage could tip over.

The heavy stroller rocked back and forth, but it remained fully upright.

Little Lily began to cry loudly from inside the padded seat.

Clara collapsed onto the cold floor, panting as tears filled her eyes.

Clara: I saved her! She is safe!

Footsteps pounded down the upper staircase as fast as someone could run.

Adrian rushed into the foyer, his face pale with sudden panic.

Elena followed right behind him, her gold heels clicking sharply against the stone.

Before Clara could stand, Elena raised a dramatic hand toward the floor.

Elena: She pushed my baby!

Elena: Adrian, she pushed the stroller right down the steps!

Adrian's eyes snapped toward Clara with sudden, burning fury.

He stepped over Clara and checked the child inside the carriage first.

Once he saw Lily was unharmed, he turned back to the bruised nanny.

Adrian: What did you do?!
