Clara moved quickly toward the bathroom door, keeping Lily pressed tightly against her chest to keep her warm. Elena lunged forward again, her high heels clicking sharply against the slick marble tiles as she tried to grab Clara's hair. Clara ducked smoothly to the side, causing Elena to lose her balance on the wet surface and stumble sideways. Elena crashed hard against the vanity counter, knocking over glass perfume bottles that shattered across the floor in a loud spray.
Elena: You think you can just walk in here and ruin my life?
Officer Clara: You are abusing a child, Elena. You are going to jail today!
Clara stepped out into the carpeted hallway, where a heavy wooden wheelchair was parked right near the top of the stairs. Elena had been using the wheelchair to move Lily around the massive house whenever the child became too weak from punishment. Clara set Lily down gently into the padded seat, wrapping two more blankets over her freezing legs. Lily grabbed Clara's sleeve, her small fingers digging into the fabric with sheer desperation and panic.
Little Lily: She told me my real mommy died! Is that true?
Officer Clara: No, honey. Your mommy is alive and she has been looking for you everywhere.
Elena: Stop lying to her, you filthy imposter! I am her mother now!
Elena rushed out of the bathroom, her eyes wild with anger as she lunged toward the wheelchair's handles. She grabbed the metal push bars and tried to jerk the wheelchair backward toward the dark guest bedrooms. Clara reacted instantly, swinging her arm around to block Elena's grip and shoving the cruel woman backward with force. Elena lost her footing on the slick wooden floorboards, slipping violently and falling hard onto her hands and knees.
Elena: My husband owns this town! You will lose your job for this!
Officer Clara: Your husband's money cannot buy you out of a child abuse charge, Elena!
Lily began to cry again, covering her face with her tiny hands as the shouting echoed down the corridor. She pressed her back deep into the wheelchair cushion, terrified that Elena would regain her footing and attack them both. Clara leaned over the chair, her voice turning soft and calm despite the adrenaline surging through her own veins. She cupped Lily's face gently, wiping away cold water and hot tears with her thumb.
Officer Clara: Look at me, Lily. I am not going to let her touch you again.
Little Lily: You're not my mommy, but please don't let her take me back!
Officer Clara: I am Officer Clara. I am here to take you home to your real mother.
Elena scrambled up from the floor, her expensive black dress torn at the knee and covered in dust. She reached into her golden leather purse on the side table and pulled out a small electronic key fob. She pressed the red button, instantly triggering the mansion's heavy security system with a deafening siren roar. Heavy steel shutters began sliding down over all the windows and grand exits, locking the whole house down tight.
Elena: Nobody leaves this house until Richard gets here with his lawyers!
Officer Clara: You just locked yourself in a room with a police officer, Elena.
The flashing red emergency lights began to spin overhead, casting bloody reflections across the white walls of the hallway. Lily screamed and pulled the blanket over her head to hide from the terrifying noise and lights. Clara stood tall, unholstering her flashlight and preparing to break through whatever stood between them and absolute freedom. The truth about who really called the police was about to explode into the open light.
