The Shadow In The Mansion

A Evil Stepmother Tried Ending My Life For Estate Money

Arthur Pendelton sat in his high-back leather chair inside the massive home office of his sprawling Atlanta mansion, staring at the financial documents spread across his dark oak desk. His heart pounded unevenly in his chest, a strange heavy ache starting to build right behind his sternum. He reached for his glass of water, his fingers trembling slightly as he tried to catch his breath. Outside, the bright morning sun poured through the high arching windows, filling the grand residence with warm golden light, but inside Arthur felt a cold draft of fear that he could not shake off. His vast fortune, built over thirty years of relentless hard work in real estate, had recently become a source of dark tension in his household. After losing his beloved wife three years ago, he had married Victoria, a striking woman who promised to bring life back into the silent halls. However, over the past several months, her sweet smile had turned cold, replaced by demanding questions about his will, his life insurance policies, and the family trust fund set aside for his eight-year-old daughter, Lily.

Lily was Arthur's entire world, a bright girl with soft brown eyes who spent her afternoons drawing pictures near the grand marble staircase. Arthur adjusted his posture, feeling another sharp pinch near his heart, and carefully opened his top drawer to ensure his emergency epinephrine pen and heart medication were in their usual place. He had a severe, violent allergy along with a delicate heart condition that required immediate care if triggered. As he pushed the drawer shut, the heavy double doors of his office creaked open, and Victoria stepped inside holding a silver tray with a steaming mug of dark herbal tea. She wore an elegant black gown, her sharp blue eyes scanning the desk before resting on his face with a cool, unreadable expression.

Victoria: You look tired, Arthur. You really should drink this tea I made for you.

Arthur: Thank you, Victoria. My chest feels a bit tight today, to be honest.

Victoria: It is just stress from the corporate audit. Drink it all while it is hot.

Arthur took the warm mug from her hand, taking a small sip of the bitter liquid without suspecting a thing. Victoria stood perfectly still beside the desk, watching every movement of his throat with a quiet, intense focus. Within minutes, a burning heat spread down Arthur's chest, taking his breath away completely. His skin turned pale, beads of sweat breaking out across his forehead as he tried to speak, but only a raspy gasp came out. The glass spilled over, soaking the legal papers on his desk as his body slumped forward in sheer panic.

Arthur: Victoria... something is wrong... my breath...

Victoria: Just relax, Arthur. Help is not coming.

Arthur: The... cabinet... my medicine...

Victoria: I moved it, Arthur. You won't be needing it anymore.

Arthur staggered to his feet, knocking his chair backward onto the hardwood floor as he tried to reach the door. His vision blurred, colors bleeding together as he stumbled out of the office into the grand luxury mansion hall. Under the full bright natural daylight reflecting off the white walls and light marble floors, right beneath the prominent US flag mounted on the wall, his legs gave out completely. Arthur collapsed onto the cold marble, clutching his chest in agonizing distress, his gasping breaths echoing off the tall ceilings as shadows slowly closed in around him.
