The loud thud of steel hitting solid wood echoed through the vast, quiet mansion. Clara swung the hammer again and again, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as the wooden panel began to splinter and crack. Each strike broke away a piece of the dark finish, revealing the hollow space tucked behind the main structure. Dust and small wood chips flew onto the pristine marble floor, but Clara did not care. She swung with pure, raw determination, driven by the desperate cries coming from inside. With one final, powerful blow, a large section of the wooden panel gave way and crashed inward. Clara dropped the hammer and pulled away the splintered edges with her bare hands, ignoring the sharp wood digging into her skin.
Inside the tiny, dark compartment, huddle on a pile of cold insulation material, was six-year-old Leo. He was wearing his favorite green dinosaur pajamas, covered in dust, his face red and stained with dried tears. He was trembling uncontrollably, clutching a small plastic toy dinosaur to his chest. The space was barely wide enough for him to sit down, completely cut off from light and air. Clara reached her arms into the dark opening without hesitation, wrapping her hands around the small boy and carefully pulling him out into the bright daylight of the hallway. The moment his feet touched the marble floor, Leo burst into loud, heartbreaking sobs and buried his face into Clara’s grey maid uniform. Clara sank onto the floor, holding him close, rocking him back and forth as tears fell from her own eyes.
Leo: She said Daddy would never find me! She said I was going to stay here forever!
Clara: Shh, it's okay baby, I've got you. You're safe now. I'm right here.
Leo: It was so dark... I couldn't breathe, Clara!
Clara: You can breathe now, sweetheart. I'm never going to let anyone hurt you again.
Clara wiped the dust from the boy's face, her heart aching at his physical condition. Leo looked pale, dehydrated, and weak, as if he had been kept in that dark room for days with barely any water or food. She held him tightly against her chest, offering him the comfort and love that had been stolen from him. But before Clara could even check him for injuries, the loud, sharp clicking of high heels echoed down the marble corridor. Evelyn marched toward them, her gold dress catching the bright daylight, her face twisted in absolute disgust and fury. Behind her was Mark Sterling, who had just stepped through the front doors of the mansion with his luggage still in hand.
Evelyn: What is the meaning of this destruction?! Clara, what have you done to my house?!
Clara: Look at what you did, Evelyn! You locked this poor child behind a wall!
Evelyn: Shut your mouth, you foolish maid! You have no right to speak to me like that!
Mark: What is going on here? Why is there wood all over the floor?
Evelyn quickly turned around, adjusting her gold dress and putting on a sad, confused expression as she faced her husband. She stepped between Mark and the wall, trying to block his view of the broken wood paneling and the weeping boy on the floor. Her voice instantly changed from sharp fury to sweet, dramatic concern. She reached out to touch Mark’s arm, but her eyes kept darting nervously toward Clara and Leo. The air in the hallway became heavy with tension as Mark looked past his wife, his eyes widening in shock as he finally processed the horrific scene unfolding in his own home.
