The Open Duffel Bag

A Dallas Maid Was Framed Until Security Rewound The Footage

The sudden physical violence stunned the entire foyer into complete silence. Elena leaned heavily against the wooden stair railing, tears streaming down her freckled face as she fought to catch her breath. The pain on her face was nothing compared to the deep shame of being publicly branded a criminal in front of dozens of rich strangers.

Arthur Sterling, an authoritative man in his early fifties wearing a tailored charcoal business suit, pushed his way through the crowd. As the CEO of Sterling Enterprises, he was used to maintaining total control over every situation. He looked down at Elena with a cold, stern expression that offered no comfort or mercy.

Arthur: That is enough shouting, Victoria. We will settle this instantly.

Victoria: Call the Dallas police right now, Arthur! She has it in her bag!

Arthur: Open the bag right now, young lady.

Elena: Mr. Sterling, please believe me. I have worked here for years without taking a single dime!

Arthur: If you have nothing to hide, unzipping that bag will prove your innocence immediately.

Elena's hands trembled so violently she could barely grip the metal zipper of her faded leather duffel bag. The crowd of business partners, divorce lawyers, and city officials watched her every move with sharp, judgment-filled eyes. They had already passed their visual verdict on the poor, crying servant girl standing in her simple gray uniform.

Slowly, the metal teeth of the zipper pulled apart with a harsh metallic sound that echoed through the quiet room. Elena pulled the leather flap open, expecting to see only her folded cotton spare uniform and her small plastic food container. Instead, her heart instantly dropped straight into her stomach as something metallic caught the bright foyer light.

Resting directly on top of her folded clothes was a striking, custom-made black velvet display stand. Mounted securely upon the soft dark velvet sat the glistening Sterling diamond necklace, its thick row of perfectly cut stones shining brilliantly under the high chandeliers. The entire crowd let out a collective, audible murmur of absolute disgust.

Victoria: Look! There it is! I told you she was a filthy thief!

Elena: No! No, this cannot be real! I did not put that in my bag!

Arthur: The evidence is right in front of us, Elena.

Elena: Somebody put this in here! I swear on my mother's life I never saw this today!

Victoria stepped forward again, a cruel and triumphant smile playing across her deep red lips. She looked at her husband with an air of absolute victory, clearly expecting him to demand immediate criminal charges and place the girl in handcuffs. Elena dropped to her knees on the hard marble floor, sobbing uncontrollably as her hands hovered over the open bag in sheer disbelief.

Victoria: Fire her immediately and have the police take her away forever!

Elena: Mr. Sterling, please think! Why would I hide it in my own bag during work?

Arthur: People do desperate things when they lack money, Elena.

Elena: I would never steal! Please, you know how hard I work every single day!
