The grand mansion in Dallas was quiet on a bright Tuesday morning. Sarah wiped down the marble railing along the grand staircase, her hands moving with soft precision. She had worked for Mr. Marcus Sterling for three years as his main housekeeper. The estate was massive, complete with high ceilings, crystal chandeliers, and expensive American artwork hanging on every wall. Sarah was a quiet woman who kept her head down and did her job well. Her main focus was always six-year-old Toby, Marcus's motherless son. Toby loved drawing, and Sarah often kept him company when his father was away running his multi-million dollar real estate company.
Toby: Sarah, look at the map I drew for school today!
Sarah: That is so beautiful, Toby. Let's hang it right here near the entrance so your dad sees it first thing.
As they stood together by the main hallway admiring the paper map, a sudden heavy bang echo-located through the front doors. Two masked intruders kicked open the solid oak entrance. They held weapons and wore dark clothing, yelling demands about a safe in the home office. Toby let out a high scream, freezing in terror against the wall. Sarah did not hesitate for a single second. She threw her own body in front of the small boy, wrapping her arms around his shoulders to shield him completely from view. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Sarah: Please! Don't hurt him!
Intruder: Shut up and show us where the safe is right now!
Sarah: He is just a child! Take whatever you want from the front rooms!
A loud gunshot suddenly shattered the air. The bullet struck Sarah directly in the upper chest. Pain burst through her body like liquid fire, and her breath caught in her throat. She gasped heavily, falling toward the cold marble floor, but her arms never loosened around Toby. Black spots danced across her eyes as blood began to stain her dark uniform. Above the staircase, a door slammed open. Marcus rushed down the stairs in panic, his tuxedo jacket flying open behind him as he saw the scene unfold in horror.
Marcus: No! Get away from her!
Intruder: We got to go, man! Let's get out of here!
The intruders turned and fled through the broken doorway, scared off by Marcus's sudden arrival and the loud noise. Marcus sprinted down the remaining marble steps, dropping to his knees beside Sarah. The young boy was sobbing violently, clinging tight to Sarah's soaked uniform. Sarah was crying silently, her skin pale, but her hand still stroked Toby's hair gently. She whispered soft words to comfort the little boy even as her own strength faded fast.
Sarah: Don't be afraid... I'm here... you are safe now, sweet boy...
Marcus: Sarah! Oh God, stay with me! Call an ambulance!
Sarah: Protect... Toby... promise me...
Marcus: Why would you protect my son like that? You took a bullet for him!
Marcus pressed his hand over her chest, trying desperately to stop the heavy bleeding. He was a powerful businessman worth millions, but in this moment, he felt completely helpless. Tears streaked down his face as he looked into Sarah's fading blue eyes. He had always treated her as just an employee, someone who cleaned his home for a monthly check. Yet she had placed her own life on the line without a moment of hesitation to save his only heir from a deadly bullet.
