The legal battle ended as quickly as it had begun. Within forty-eight hours, the court issued a permanent protective order keeping Victoria far away from Lyra and the Vance family estate. The court also stripped Victoria of all claims to any family assets, ordering her to repay every dollar she had attempted to steal through fraudulent means. Dr. Harrison was stripped of his medical license and faced criminal conspiracy charges alongside Victoria.
A few days later, the Dallas estate was quiet once again. The sun shone brightly through the double wooden doors, casting warm light across the clean hardwood floors. Eleanor walked through the living room, holding two cups of warm hot chocolate. She walked over to the sofa, where Lyra was sitting comfortably, reading a storybook.
Eleanor: Here you go, sweetheart. Extra marshmallows, just the way you like it.
Lyra: Thank you, Aunt Eleanor.
Lyra took the mug with both hands, a genuine, happy smile resting on her face for the first time in months. The frightened look in her eyes was completely gone, replaced by the peace of knowing she was safe.
Lyra: Is Victoria ever coming back here?
Eleanor: No, Lyra. She is going to be away for a very long time. She will never step foot inside this house again.
Lyra: What about Martha? Is her son going to be okay?
Eleanor: Martha is staying right here with us. I set up a dedicated medical trust fund from the estate to pay for all of her son's cancer treatments. He is going to get the best care in Texas.
Lyra smiled brightly and set her warm cup down on the table. She reached out and hugged Eleanor tightly around the waist, pressing her face against her aunt's shoulder.
Lyra: I was so scared when she held those scissors, Aunt Eleanor. I thought nobody would believe me.
Eleanor: I will always believe you, Lyra. My job in this life is to protect you, love you, and make sure you grow up safe and strong. Nobody is ever going to take your home or your future away from you.
Eleanor wrapped her arms around her niece, holding her close as the warm afternoon sunlight filled the room. The dark shadows of greed and deception that had hung over the Vance estate were finally wiped away. Justice had been served, the truth had won, and young Lyra was finally free to grow up in safety and peace.
