The morning sun poured through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the top-floor executive suite at Vance Enterprises. Light bounced off the polished white marble floors, illuminating every corner of the high-rise office. On the far wall, a large American flag hung framed in glass, a symbol of the company's long national standing. Richard Vance, the chief executive officer, sat behind his dark mahogany desk reviewing quarterly financial summaries. The hum of the city traffic below was lost behind thick soundproof glass, leaving the room almost silent. That silence was gently broken by the rhythm of a wet mop dragged across marble.
Richard looked up from his leather folder, expecting to see Sarah, the veteran custodian who had kept the executive suite spotless for nearly five years. Instead, his gaze fell upon a tiny figure dressed in an oversized dark blue mechanic jumpsuit. The sleeves were rolled up three times to clear her wrists, and her small feet were tucked into plain white sneakers. She could not have been more than seven years old. Her light hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail as she leaned her full weight against the wooden handle of the heavy mop.
Richard set his silver pen down on the desk. He stood up slowly, watching the small child struggle to wring out the mop bucket. Her small hands were red from the cool water, but she worked with intense focus. There were no security guards with her, nor any adult supervisors in sight. Richard walked across the wide marble floor, his leather dress shoes clicking softly against the bright tiles. He stopped a few feet away, taking care not to startle her as she carefully wiped down the baseboards beneath the mounted national flag.
He knelt down on one knee so he was at eye level with the young girl. Up close, he could see smudges of dust on her small cheek and tears threatening to spill from her large brown eyes. The dark blue jumpsuit swallowed her tiny frame completely. Richard kept his voice low and calm, not wanting to frighten the little intruder. He reached out gently, resting his hand on the mop handle to ease her burden.
CEO Richard: Who let you in here? Why are you mopping?
The little girl flinched slightly before looking directly into Richard's eyes. A single tear escaped her eyelid and rolled down her stained cheek. Her chest heaved as she tried to keep her voice steady, but a soft sob betrayed her fear. She gripped the wooden mop handle tighter, as if it were the only thing keeping her upright in the massive room.
Lily: My mom is very sick... I need money for her medicine, so I came to work in her place.
Richard felt a sharp pang in his chest. He knew Sarah had taken a few personal days recently, but he had assumed she was taking time off for a vacation. He had no idea the dedicated woman was facing a severe medical crisis at home. The thought of this child sneaking into a secure corporate building, wearing an oversized uniform, just to protect her mother's job and buy prescription drugs broke his heart. Before Richard could offer a comforting word, the heavy wooden doors of the executive suite slammed open with a sharp, echoing crack.
